March 28, 2014
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has re-opened the Elmer’s Island refuge to visitors seven days a week. The refuge will be open each day 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

The following activities are strictly prohibited on Elmer’s Island:

• All commercial fishing

• Recreational harvest of shrimp, crabs and oysters

Someone just pointed this out to me two weeks ago

I read the DWF article as they opened it in March and those are the rules until noted otherwise. Certainly wouldnt leave it up to a WWL article, but its not my arse on the line.

Included everything else but the crabbing, seems like you would be able to find something else updated saying it was allowed

FWIW, went to 1921 Seafood in Houma last weekend with my family and my dad ordered some boiled crabs. They were without a doubt the biggest crabs I've ever seen...they were nearly the same size as my mom's dungeness. Asked the owner and he said they came out of Montegut; so I'd go there.

They are catching early am on incoming tide. Not killing it though. I'd wait until next weekend, it's a mess down her already

My neighbor told me earlier tonight that he caught some today. He filled a 48 quart in an hour and came home.

Rod and reel fishing only on Elmer's. You can't even throw cast net for bait, got scolded last weekend by green jeans. I have seen some messicans crabbing on beach, but they are above the law.

You can crab on Point Aux Chene WMA with ring nets and hand lines. Why wouldnt you be able to on Elmers Island?
