Look, I know you're a gump, but do you have any comprehension of what "representative" means?

You know, someone who "represents" the interests of the people in his district?

So majority rules?

Theoretically, yes majority rules. Where do you think minority rights and minority preference came from?

However, majority doesn't always rule as is evidenced by the right to abortion in all 50 states.

If they were honorable individuals, I would say they should vote as they feel. The populace is a groupthink infested cesspool of idiots.

With that said, they aren't honorable and I'd like to pick choice C, none of the above.

An elected representative is to vote however he wishes whyever he wishes, and his constituents are to vote however they wish whyever they wish.

Let's ask James Madison what representative democracy in the U.S. is supposed to be about:

"The effect of [a representative democracy is] to refine and enlarge the public views, by passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of the nation...." - James Madison

Representatives sometimes have a duty to do what is unpopular, but in the nation's best interest.

Elected reps should take into consideration all available information to decide how to vote. They should listen to the people that they represent, but the general population may not have as much information to make the best decision. They also must be held accountable to their voting record. If, after the appropriate time to reflect, the base does not agree with how the rep votes, they must find a replacement.

Minority rights come from the constitution as interpreted through the judicial system.

Yet when a court makes a ruling to do just that, people get all upset saying they are "legislating from the bench".

The rep is elected by the people to make these decisions. If the people don't agree with his/her decisions, they vote them out in favor of someone else.

They should vote based on the way the majority of their constituents feel since that is who they are supposed to represent. Real world, they vote the way the money wants them too. All for their own gain, they could give a shite about the populace.

This is 100% false.

Otherwise, we'd have a direct democracy.

Reps come from the same place as their constituents. Therefore, they know the needs of their area, the problems, etc. The people can elect the person who they feel best represents them.

The point of electing a representative is so that he can make his OWN decisions. So that a majority on an issue can't just strong-arm a minority with more votes. It's up to the rep to make the smart decision.

Otherwise, we'd just need to poll people and adjust the laws according to the results.

We're a representative democracy and no a direct democracy for a reason.

He "represents" in the sense that he is one of them. He comes from the same place.

It doesn't mean he has to always vote with the polling majority.

It's kind of eye-opening that so many people in this thread (especially conservatives) don't understand why our Republic was set up the way it is.

Conservatives should know better than anyone considering their admiration for the founding fathers and their vision for America.
