Dunno, but not as many who were slaughtered before the bomb, right?

Do you think their knowledge of our actual willingness to use it counted for something?

Nope, we had it they didn't why wouldn't we use it if they invaded western Europe?

I also don't think the demonstration was necessary as Tuba suggests, the awesome might of the blast could not be underestimated by those in power in the USSR once they understood the weapon was feasible. The theoretical power was clearly understood, the reality was demonstrated at Trinity,

That's not what you said, crawfish
Yes, in fact it's exactly what I said.

This.

I am strongly convinced that there would have been a World War III between the United States and the Soviet Union had there not have been a nuclear deterrent.

I'm not twisting anything. We all saw what that was in response to. I don't have to explain anything, you do. No one is buying your attempt to save face. No one.

it was a psychological weapon as well.

And that, more than anything else, is what ended up bringing about the surrender.

C'mon TX, your killing millions comment was in direct response to the OP's mention of the bomb being used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You can be wrong, but don't be dishonest about what you said when it's meaning was clear to everyone.

It's fun to watch you try to spin this into a positive.

Once again you have been shown to be the moonbat you are.

Shouldn't have attacked Pearl Harbor.

Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'.

They should be lucky we didn't wipe out their entire civilization after executing their emperor in a public forum.

All part of Chicken's conspiracy to increase hits on the website and thus earn more advertising revenue.

You folks on this board aren't the brightest bulb in the drawer, so I try and give you a pass every chance I get, but this was simple English. Even you can figure it out. Try....real hard. I think you can do it.

Question
quote:

On balance, dropping the bomb was the right call by Truman for the sake of long-term peace.

My answer

Yes, killing millions of people is always a good way to keep the peace.

I'm sorry, but I would take the lives of 130,000 Japanese civilians over the life of a single American soldier any day of the week.

The Israel/Palestine threads have been fun today. I can only imagine how epic they would have been if that unhinged loon was here.

Theoretically, there shouldn't have been any reason to drop nukes. The B-29 firebombing raids on Tokyo did more damage than both of them. That alone should have caused a more rational enemy to sue for peace.

good point ...

Admiral Halsey certainly would have upvoted this. He said "When we're through, the Japanese language will only be spoken in Hell".
