Japanese officials in Tokyo were aware of what happened to Hiroshima by the morning of the next day.

The Soviets knew we had the bomb and what it could do, we didn't need a demonstration at Hiroshima to let them know the power we held, they had spies keeping them informed and delivering the technology.

I think Truman's decision in part was to end the war quickly so that the Soviets did not get a larger role in Japan. Had we not ended the war quickly they would have demanded more than just the northern Kuriles for their involvement, they would have been an occupying power in Japan.

But there were many reasons to use the bomb on those rat bastards.

It's not like they were waiting on a carrier pigeon to bring the news. There was plenty enough communication, and very little doubt as to Japan's continued defiance.

Further - the Japanese had already made attempts to surrender on the sole condition they keep their Emperor - something we allowed them to do anyway and in spite of their eventual unconditional surrender - and an mere formality.
It was the difference between allowing an emperor to keep on with his oppressive, totalitarian regime

v.

allowing him to maintain utterly powerless figurehead status while democracy and freedom and civil liberties were installed.

Big difference. They weren't ready to surrender. They were ready to end the war. We may have been right back in the war in a few years if we had allowed that. And this time, maybe they would have nukes.

1. Truman's decision to drop the atom bomb is the primary (or most significant) reason

According to a piece I saw on the History Channel, the reason Truman dropped the bombs was because the kamikaze pilots of Japan were kicking our navy's arse with no end in sight. The A-bombs were the answer to the problem, according to this piece about the pilots.

Do you think their knowledge of our actual willingness to use it counted for something?

I think a real demonstration was needed. There spies may have confirmed an explosion in the desert - Hiroshima confirmed our ability not only to make an explosion but to deliver it.

Not true. The military leaders and many of the civilian leaders wanted to carry on the fight. Only when they asked Emperor Hirohito what his opinion was did the Japanese begin to entertain the thought of surrender. Even when he told them to surrender, elements of the military leadership attempted a coup to stop the surrender from taking place.

Thank you. You beat me to the punch.

There was a clique of crazy bastards within the Japanese military that wanted to continue the fight even after they saw what could happen.

Not sure why that is, but answer me this, why aren't you folks out there killing someone? It really doesn't matter who, they could eventually become a nuisance to you or someone you love. Why wait?

130,000 - the number of combined people who died in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Aout the same number or more people were killed on Okinawa just a few months earlier and 14,000 of these were Americans.

I take that trade any day.

Theoretically, there shouldn't have been any reason to drop nukes. The B-29 firebombing raids on Tokyo did more damage than both of them. That alone should have caused a more rational enemy to sue for peace.

A hell of a lot fewer than would have been without it.

This is true but it was a psychological weapon as well.

250,000 Japanese and American soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians died during the fighting on the island of Okinawa. That was over the course of two months.

It was the bloodiest battle fought in the Pacific during World War II and it is because of the fighting on Okinawa, coupled with the fighting on Iwo Jima earlier in the year, that Truman decided to drop the bomb.

The Japanese defense was getting fiercer as the war approached the home island.
