I see nothing wrong with shifting from entrance exam to "whole resume" type approach.

They are just going to give people bonus points for being black. Essentially forcing the school to accept more blacks even when Hispanics and Asians perform better.

it's like the article in the OP says, poor people don't have the same chances at ECs and resume-building

Umm, and they also don't have the money for fancy prep classes and resources to ace this make or break exam. It goes both ways. And in fact, good working experience like this kid:

A Chinese student like Ting Shi who has to help out in his parents’ laundromat

will look great on a resume. And it will lend itself to an awesome personal statement. But if hes working so much he has no time to prepare for this one test, he has no way to make up for that.

Well if your mind is already made up about the issue....

i'd say with an elite intelligence (and some educational backbone, which they have) they have a much better chance of acing the test with limited resources than being able to build a resume otherwise

Well, thats totally just your opinion.

I'd say a teenager who works to support his family shows tremendous leadership and character, and would be a great addition to any elite high school. That is just my opinion though, as well.

What else could they possibly mean? How idiotic/racist does one have to be to assume that blacks are going to have better overall resumes than their white, Asian, and Hispanic peers? You really think all of these kids are fed with a silver spoon and never do anything impressive?

We aren't talking about the general population. They only accept the top 3%. Let's face it. Asians will do just as well in the "whole resume" competition as well.

That is, until you start penalizing Asians for not being black.

we can disagree on the impact of asians, but the (obvious) real target of this is black students

how does this benefit them? or, as it was kind of asked on page one: what kind of set criteria will be created to benefit that group?
