4 of my top 10 movies are on this list, so I am okay with it.

Your assessment is horrible.

Yeah, apparently the movie buffs over at IMDB thought it was a good movie.

While I don't believe it deserves such a lofty ranking, even for a minute, I do find it funny the contrast in taste here as opposed to there.

The Dark Knight is consistently slammed on this board, as is every other popular movie that manages to garner critical acclaim.

I might be in the minority but Fellowship is my favorite LotR film. I wouldn't put any of them in a all time top 10 though. Same thing with TDK, I love this film but it's not top 10 all time.

Jaws needs to be on that list IMO.

There is no contrast, the TDK trilogy ended up somewhere around 40, that's fairly high, all time.

This is all in your head. People enjoy The Dark Knight. Most respect it for what it is. TDKR...that's another story. Deservedly so.

Unless of course you mean that anyone that doesn't love the movie unconditionally is "slamming it," then it's just a matter of perspective.

I think we both love Gravity quite a bit, and it is routinely slammed on this board. That doesn't mean that it's the board's M.O.

Stop complaining. This board is actually one of the most fair boards when it comes to discussion and debates. Good mix of folks here.

And again, our Top 20 is better than IMDB's, represents a better selection of Movies and honestly, better taste. (And it contains most of these just reordered to better reflect value.)

For comparison sake: TD.COM MWADS vote on 11/14/13

Bolded films on IMDB's list.

quote:

1. Godfather I & II
2. Seven Samurai
3. Vertigo
4. Goodfellas
5. Casablanca
6. Lawrence of Arabia
7. Schindler's List
8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
9. Star Wars
10. Once Upon a Time in the West
-----
11. Jaws
12. Shawshank Redemption, The
13. Empire Strikes Back, The
14. Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The

15. Citizen Kane
16. Silence of the Lambs, The
17. City of God
18. Pan's Labyrinth
19. Cool Hand Luke
20. Departed, The
21. Braveheart
22. Pulp Fiction
23. Fight Club

24. Graduate, The
25. Dr. Strangelove

LOTR is at 26, TDK at 40, 12 Angry Men at 172. I probably don't agree with at least 4 or 5 movies on there, but that's a better group, easily.

This list is reminiscent of thinking something is "great" just because you like it. Those are two completely different concepts that people usually mash together that creates dumb rankings like this. These are all likable films that certain types of people enjoy, namely 22-32 year old males

Well, I think that it is a mistake to assume that a top 10 list has to be considered the "10 greatest movies of all time." Instead of looking at it like that, I think that the objective should be seen as a likability list with a "recency bias."

IMDB rankings and ratings are all about likability. The very reason why Shawshank is the number 1 movie is because it's not polarizing at all, and it has a high enough general appeal for almost all people to give it at least a "good" rating.

I agree, but even as a likability assessment, my comment:

You need more modifiers on the definition of the list.

It still couldn't be considered "universal appeal," although it appears as such. I'd agree that some of these are universally likable, but only a few. There's both a recency and gender bias, and probably age bias going on too.

Imdb should have a grace period before people can vote.

The dark knight was on there with thousands of 10 stars by 2am it's release date.

The list is too reactionary too newer movies

The formula is supposed to account for, this, as much as mathematically possible. We based ours on it with some tweaks.

The dark knight is only on there because heath ledger died before it was released. Had he not died it would have been just another batman movie.

You realize tens of thousands of people voted on its placement, right? You sound like you're under the impression that the editors of IMDB compiled their own top 10 list.
