Lighter mono is way easier to deal with than braid IMO. 8-10 lb mono is more than sufficient in open water. Let your drag work, that's what it's there for.

I would have too many shock breaks on certain applications.

I've bass fished around cypress banks and grass mats most of my life, I'm just in the habit of hooking a fish and getting it to the boat quick, tight drag. Plus I snag a lot, I'd break off too much with 8lb

But I see your point

Nah. This stuff

Used just enough of the 15 to spool one reel, and went through an entire spool of 12 in a year and a half or so. Had the same problems with both. Breaking a little above the knot. Multiple time a bait I had been fishing with for hours broke off on the backcast. Haven't had that problem with other lines. The 15 was worse than the 12

I can't remember the last time I broke off on a bass that wasn't on the hook set. Had to have been in the 80s. I'm sure it was with 12lb Big game.

I always forget about maxima. I might have to give it a try next time I respool.

You can drop down on it. 15 is like other's 20.

Tie a leader on for specks

To each his own, but are the guys who use leaders doing so because they have a history of losing fish due to line breakage without a leader? Or do they just see others using them so they do to? For live shrimp, I've always used a Kahle tied onto 17 lb. mono under a weighted rattle cork, and I've often outfished guys with elaborate setups. Not ragging, just an honest question. I've just found that the simplest setup worked just fine.

How are y'all putting the leaders on ? Swivels or a double uni knot?
Alberto knot...much easier to tie on the water IMO...much smaller diameter too so it doesn't get caught in the rod eyes

Alberto knot

First I had heard of this knot. Tried it out, I like it a little smaller then the double uni.

I always use mono my self usually big game 12# , I tried braided years back and never liked it , but im always willing to change or try something new , so what is the best braided to use ....

btw I never have a problem with my line breaking even with big reds ..... but I do change my line often due to memory mostly ....

I usually go w/ power pro on spinning reel and 12lb stren or trilene on baitcaster. I'd use more power pro but stuff ain't cheap and I find it digs into spool on baitcaster after a few uses.

Yea, the knot is a little longer but flatter than the uni. Makes it to where it doesnt get caught in the rod eyes as much
