re: Trading in my F150, need help.Posted by Ice Cream Sammich on 7/13/14 at 11:47 am to DownshiftAndFloorIt
I'm going to do deletes at a minimum. It cost my dad 1k to get his dpf cleaned. I can get the deletes and 5 more mpg for that cost.
I'm honestly second guessing getting a diesel at this point. I wouldn't mind a 6.7 but really don't want the note.

Doing anything to a $60k vehicle that voids the warranty is stupid at minimum.
Buying a diesel when you don't need one is pissing away a lot of money for nothing IMO.

How much warranty does a 2011 have left? I'm not familiar with their schedules but seems like doing my own preventive work is smart, at best.
I mean I get that you know diesels and all but in the first post I discussed getting a 5th wheel camper. Who are you to judge how someone spends their money? Do you tell other men how to dress too?

I wouldn't own a diesel not under warranty

I don't care how you spend your money. I won't loose a lick of sleep if you buy a 6.4 and juice it up without changing head studs and blow it to bits.
I'm just telling you it's not smart to do anything to a vehicle under warranty. I think the power train warranty is 6 years 100k miles on those. Somebody here knows for sure what it is. Warranty is Ford offering to fix your problems. Don't let them off the hook. You paid for that warranty.
As far as I know Ford got the 6.7 right. If it's out of warranty and the DPF plugs up then deleting might be a good option, but I'm not a fan of driving around a not street legal vehicle.

did find a 2011 6.7 with 50k for $44,000. It's a KR like the rest. Just the dealer really pissed me off.
How about a new KR for under 52K?

I wish. Unfortunately, that's just not in the budget. How much Def fluid does your 6.7 go through?

I've filled it twice and have 13k miles
About every 5k miles

For the money you're talking about spending you should easily be able to find one with a good bit of warranty left.
Diesel repairs are ignorantly expensive and even routine maintenance is not cheap. All that power costs a whole lot of money

Go to SpeeDee oil change. It costs $115 IIRC. I don't even waste my time changing my own because it costs $105 to do that, and then I've got to get rid of 4.5 gallons of old oil. I just get them to grab a cup of the first bit of oil coming out and the last bit
Downshift, you still have my email? Send me a link to that truck you're looking at. I'm not gonna go swoop it out from you, just curious the options, mileage, and price to compare to what I'm seeing

I don't think I have your email but I might still have your number. It's not listed anywhere it's a family deal so it's probably not very useful. It's an 04 with 215k miles. My old man just sold his 02 with 190k miles. I don't know of anybody who gets rid of the 6.0s till about 180k.
I know of one riding around with 325k and another with 280k. They're bulletproof.

I am looking at a couple, but the main candidate is an 04 extended cab 4wd LS for $11.5k. I think it only has 114,000 miles on it too. Needs a new bedliner and 4 tires, but it is straight as an arrow. It's a small little dealership, and every time I show up, the dude isn't there. I am heading that down that way again this week, so hopefully we can get it done then.
Fin, SpeeDee only takes like 10 minutes. I normally drive through on my way to go do something else. Once I found out the price, I was hooked. I use Rotella T and go at 5000 miles give or take 100. With this new engine, I did one at 50, one at 500, and need to do a 1000mi one now. I've only had the fricker back for two weeks and have spent $350 on oil changes alone. I need to do fuel filters right now too.

I usually get about 8k miles out of an oil change

Check your TD email. I sent you a link to the one I was looking at buying

ICS, I am late to the party, but:
If you are borrowing, check the interest rates on new vs. used.
It may be you can afford new.
If there is any way you can swing the 6.7, this is the way to go, bar none.
If you must get the 6.4, buy an extended warranty, if you can get one. (Which I doubt, and that should tell you all you need to know)
Only buy the warranty from Ford.
Last, Duramax is better than any 6.4.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at some duramaxes online but couldn't find a used one to test drive. Admittedly, I've never driven one.

For that gen, just a more solid engine than the 6.4.
Gonna be tough to find a lightly used diesel that isn't high as a giraffe's arse.
No point in getting in a hurry.
