BP, ive killed hundreds of hogs over the years and the only "bad" ones i ever shot were boars at my lease in Tx. the meat looked fine but they stunk something awful.
all the hogs ive killed in La have been fine. im guessing it has something to do with environment: more water/mud in La and are in ag intensive areas with beans, millet, etc
total time from kill to cooler with ice was 1.5 hrs, same as always. quartered up the next am bc it was after midnight when i was finished.
thoughts?

Probably a dumb question but if you guys leave the remains lying at the kill sight after taking the backstraps, hams and shoulders, would the sounder still come back to eat the leftovers?
I know yotes will be on it in no time but just wondering if hogs will eat their "own" remains since they are omnivorous.
Oh and BTW on the smackdown and all pics in this thread guys!!

Mack I think you are fine. As long as the meat has a good texture and is not mushy and has no foul smell you should be fine.
On the boars in TX having a smell it all depends on what they have been rubbing on and if a sow is in heat nearby. I think the boars piss on themselves when they are around sows in heat and it makes them smell horrible. The meat is usually still good. The largest Boar I have eaten was 305 killed in a trap. Everyone loved the breakfast sausage he made.
I have camera footage of hogs eating on fresh hog gut piles. They usually visit the piles in the first 1-2 nights or not at all. Mostly eating "fresh" meat I suppose. I have also had them come root up blood soaked sand the day after a kill.

yep, all was fine
the main reason i don't like fooling with mature boars is the difficulty in dealing with the hide/shield. i cut the backstrap out of a BIG one that was getting carted off to the gut pile "just to see". i looked and smelled fine but it was dry as heck. prob would have been good if mixed with something fatty.
fyi, the biggest we've shot and killed in Tx was 405#, BEAST to haul out.
i did gut shoot one in west feliciana that looked bigger than that, and i'm glad he ran off and died somewhere else.

405 is a beast! most of the hog contests across TX and the country for that matter rarely break 300 and if they do it is usually only by a few lbs. It is amazing though how many people that don't hunt tell me they saw a 400 + lb hog just the other night.
I have to agree with the toughness of hide, thickness of skin and shield on big boars. I actually carry several knives and a small diamond sharpener in my field dressing kit. The pics on the previous page were from a 23 hog massacre and we dulled 4 different knives between the wife and I on all those small hogs. And you are correct, the big boars have less fat and what they do have is very dense. I don't use fat from boars. I will however scrape the fat off the skin on a big sow. White soft delicious pork fat!
