It will be VERY interesting to see if Brendan starts to develop a new role for Stevie

Do what City did with Lampard in regards to Stevie. After watching that West Ham match though, our back line is just pitiful. Nothing new, I know, but it was painful to watch. We dont hold a line at all and its like everybody is expecting someone to take the ball, but nobody actually gets on the ball. They show up late to the ball in multiples, leaving the opposition plenty of open lanes for runs. Then we do not sustain any attack or control the ball in the front 3rd. We have our possession, but we do not sustain and continuously chip away at the defense. I feel like we have tons of talent but none of them have gained any chemistry, which is confusing and frustrating because we have had a few matches now. Moreno pressing though was the one bright spot.

So no Hendo vs. Middles as he's nursing a hip injury.

Allen is out.

Cou is having a groin issue.

So I guess with Everton coming up, we'll have to play Suso or someone in the middle? I just can't imagine us playing Gerrard gain and then expecting him to come back this weekend.

Also, a couple of notes from things BR has said this week -

1. We played more long balls than West Ham. He seemed really disappointed in this

2. Our pressing patterns are off - he says he will try to figure out player's strengths and also keep to one system while the injured remain out. Somewhere Lucas said "what, me?"

At least he's figuring out some issues and working on them.....Lambert supposed to get his first start - I have to hope for something like this -

---------------Migs or Jones (don't care)

Manquillo--Toure--Sakho----Enrique

--------Suso-------Lucas-----

------------Lallana

Borini------Lambert------Markovic

Maybe Rossiter starts or comes on - we need to see how close he is to competing. At this point, we may need him to play some minutes this season.

Rossiter scores on his first attempt! A 35 yard strike into an unguarded net 10 minutes in. What a dream for the kid

ETA: 1-0 33'

Did Swagotelli start on the bench today? I am guessing that is just a rest day type thing?

Can't watch, I'm at work. How are the front and back lines playing? And is the passing at least moderately crisp?

Swag did not start, not sure if he's on the bench or not. I'm at work also just following twitter feed on my phone. Starters were Mignolet; Manquillo, Toure, Sakho, Enrique; Rossiter, Lucas; Lallana, Raheem, Markovic; Rickie

Personally, I won't be broken up a bit if we lose. I don't care if we win the Carling/Capital One/whatever they are calling it this year cup.

I would rather focus all of our efforts on the league and the CL. We are thin enough that we cant afford to lose one of our key players dicking around on some of the goat tracks these games are sometimes played on

Anyone have a decent way to watch ET? I'm watching on First Row but it's freezing every 5 seconds and makes following it impossible.

BeIN has rights to this game, but they started it on delay and so its only in the 1st half (that's stupid).

Boy oh boy oh boy.... WTF!!!!!! Our defense is bad. And Sterling did us now favors there. We were seconds away from a 2-1 win and now its heading to PKs, courtesy of a PK.

ETA: Sterling gives them the ball on a poor decision that gives Middles the game tying goal, then he misses his PK... Shame on you.

ETA2: We win 14-13 on PKs. Wow.

It was always headed to penalties. You could have predicted it at the start. Because Liverpool.

Because Middlesbrough also. They've been our bogey team for decades.

My big concern right now is that last year teams had to be a bit careful about going at our defense due to our offense. Thats why we had so many 5-3 type games - if teams came out at us, we made them pay. Sure they scored, but not as much as we did.

This year, we don't have near the goalscoring ability and are therefore unable to make them pay for coming at us. Thats why we're getting beat 3-1. We're still susceptible to the 3, but we're not getting anywhere near the 5.

I don't know how to correct this other than to completely shift the team to a much more compact and defensive shape. Or, get the guys playing well enough that we start scoring 5 again. That could be next week or it could be March (or never ).

It is much earlier in the season, but this Merseyside derby feels very much like late last January to me.

We started the campaign out strong, even topping the table in December but after the 2 losses at City and Chelsea and an unimpressive draw at home versus Aston Villa to go to 13W 4D and 5L. It felt like the season was starting to slip away, and our tenuous grasp on 4th would be gone within the month.

Fast forward 90 minutes, we completely eviscerated Everton and kick started a title challenging campaign that saw us finish out the season 13-2-1.

I don't think this team is that strong, nor will they compete for the title, but I am optimistic that this game we will see everything start to click and a team identity start to form.

"A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe that you are the best and then make sure that you are. In my time at Liverpool we always said we had the best two teams in Merseyside, Liverpool and Liverpool reserves." Bill Shankly

You never know... early on last season we were winning by 1 goal.. we couldn't score in the second half of games (everyone made a big deal of it).. People wanted Stevie benched... BR's teams have gotten better as the season progressed in both years he's been here... I am optimistic!

That said, there are plenty o' warning signs that this is gonna be a bumpy ride...

The other thing I'm wondering about our slow start - how much is the WC hurting us?

Guys like Stevie really didn't have a break. Yet they are going agains the West Hams and Villas where most of the squad had an off-season.

Hoping we can get the offense going against Everton - everyone else has.

This is the main thing I have faith about - Rodgers will figure out what works best for our crew (and make a few mistakes along the way) My fear about this is that our "crew" is a lot bigger now, has a lot more games to play (And less time to work with Rodgers) and this may mean a little bit more up and down of a ride than the ride up the first two seasons under him have been.
