Sammy was a very good situational back for LSU. Not big and durable enough for a feature back in the SEC. He made one of the best TD runs I ever saw, against MSU, of about seven yards. He had their defense grabbing air.

I couldn't believe a skinny white guy the same height and weight as I then was playing SEC football. Dude looked 40 years old too. Great ball player thought.

Trivia - You can see him lining up on the TV in the bar scene in the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruse.

I was just a young fan then, but I remember Sammy Martin looked freaking 40 when he was in college. If I remember right, he was already going bald.

Yep, almost bald already at 20. Incredibly fast...could have sworn he also ran track at LSU but a google search didn't back that up.

Remember his run against A&M most of all.

Sammy Martin - 1980s Aside from being white, he had very little in common with Hester. As a runner, he was used much more like Holiday - a speed back with little power. He was also outstanding out of the backfield or even lining up as a receiver. In the pros, he was a KR and backup WR. He could fly. Not fast for a white guy but for any guy.

This is correct was good for ten plays a game and was legitimately a gamer. Whether intended or not was a mismatch for the defense to account for. AandM game took a short pass to the house outran everyone.

we really weren't that strong at the rb position in the 80s?

We were strong. Just not as strong as we are now.

Dalton Hillard, Gary James, Harvey Williams all did well in NFL. Plus Eddie Fuller during that time. I could agrue that Sammy would have done better if we weren't so talented.

This talk about Sammy Martin got me thinking about some rumors I've heard that Trey Quinn is the fastest of the incoming freshman. I find that a little hard to believe but his 4.39 40 time is faster than both LF and Dupre among incoming offensive skill players.

This is correct. Sammie played from '84-'87. Hlliard & James from '82-'85. Harvey, Eddie, and Windom (?) from '86 on.

Sammie had speed and caugt the ball well. Seemed to recall we lined him up at receiver a lot.

Like Mr. Sid said that went to school with Sammy. He was that good and lightning fast. I remember sitting in the old west end upper deck before the new renovations and was at that game when Hodson was a redshirt freshman and the Aggies came into Tiger Stadium ranked #1 in the nation. I remember seeing Sammy on a slant wide open on the middle of the field and thinking if Hodson can get the ball to him, It's a sure fire TD and that is what happened. Also a clutch receiver. Game against the Greenies in the Superdome and Mack Brown had the Greenies ready. Comes down to a 4th down with us having the ball and if we don't pick it up. Ballgame over. Mr. Cool catches the 4 or 5 yard pass from Hodson to pick up the 1st down and we go on to beat the Greenies on the game ending winning drive. Sammy was a great Tiger.

He was that good. The guy played in the NFL. He played a few years after I graduated but I would ride my mountain bike around campus and see him walking around. It always amazed me that this little prematurely bald white guy was burning people every weekend in the SEC. One of my all time favorites!

Sammy Martin & Harvey Williams rotated a lot at RB

I remember as a little kid Sammy Martin making his first career appearance in Tiger Stadium (165lbs) in the 4th qtr vs Wichita State...and had some nice runs...he bulked up to maybe 175-178lbs by his Senior season.

Yeah Martin was legit...ran a hand timed 4.35 in college & low 4.4's at the NFL Combine...he was fast for any color! Had a 95 yard Kick Return TD in the NFL

I became a pats fan, behind who dats of course, bc they drafted Sammy and Tommy.

That 9 yd td run he had vs Ole Miss was a thing of beauty. Greatest 9 yd run I ever seen.
