It's based on D&D rules.

This game was made before BioWare got bought up, and there are a TON of player dialogue choices so voice acting would have been really expensive.

Does Origins really pick up and kick as much arse as everyone says once you get the hang of it?
Yes. Once you get past the origin tale and become a grey warden things get going.

I have no clue, whatsoever, what this means. Is there a quick-and-easy explanation? Or should I go ahead and start looking some future reading material to get me up to speed?
It's been a month or two since I last played it, but basically I don't have any clue what most of the traits/attributes actually do in-game (with the exception of the obvious ones like strength), and I have no clue what skills/abilities I need to try to be using. I have leveled up multiple times, each time dumping points into traits like strength (being a warrior and all) and unlocking what I thought would be a useful combat-related skill, then once I get into combat I have no clue how to employ that skill (are there "passive" skills, maybe?). Damn, I am realizing I really don't have a clue how to play this game.

This was the most confusing for me at first. This gift guild will help a lot.

Bioware needs to finish this game so they can start working on KOTOR 3. That's my hope.
