I honestly always thought that the "Chinese Bandits" was a compliment and not any kind of derogatory racial slur. Wearing the masks did not seem to be making fun of Chinese people, but rather, was talking about how they were ferocious fighters.

I completely agree, just like the Redskins thing going on now. It's not derogatory in any way. It's used as intimidation because the Native Americans were known for being fierce warriors during their time.

What I find ironic about the Chinese Bandits is that it could be used today and the only people that would complain would be white people. Asians that I know flat out don't care what you think of them or their culture. They are a proud and loyal group who remains true to their roots, something we seriously lack in the US.
The only Asians or Chinese people that I could imagine making a fuss of this are the younger generation who were born in the US and have become Americanized to the point that they are completely out of touch with their own culture.

Agree

Sometimes, it is meant to honor them or say that the group referring to them wants to emulate them in certain aspects.

Meh, I find this explanation as more of a cop out. Still not that big of a deal though.

quote:

I am not sure that the Chinese Bandits or these masks were necessarily an example of that.

Also agree with this, I never said different. I only responded to a poster who made the comment about not doing stuff like this anymore was part of the pussification of America.

I just said that this type of stuff has no place today, and many posters apparently disagree with me.

No, it is not derogatory to you in anyway. I am not a sensitive guy at all, but to say it is no way derogatory is just stupid and blind, i'm sorry.

I'm sure there are many Native Americans who do not care, but then again I am sure there are many who do care.

Not true, Asians very much so care about their culture, I've known many.

All them minorities not wanting their culture mocked and turned into a caricature are what's killing this country.

Its typically more derogatory to the white Anglo-Saxon apologist. AKA Pussy.

Just look at the high schools Indian reservations and take notice of their school mascots.

Red Mesa High School in Zona 99.3% Navajo = Redskins

Tecumseh High School mascot is the Savages. A HS in Oklahoma made up of Sac and Fox, Iowa, Kickapoo, Shawnee and Potawatomi.

But I guess that they understand that its a thing of respect and pride NOT a slander.

Just as the Notre Dame Irish Catholics took on the "Fighting Irish" as a mark of pride that was a derogatory term.

"Redskin" was never a racial slur. It was always a term of endearment or pride in the Native American community. The team name came from Native Americans who played on the team!

They have done poll after poll of Native Americans and the vast majority are not offended in any of them. The only people offended by this are PC white people who are trying to be offended for other people.

I can buy that.

The only point I was making in that statement is that you cannot make a blanket statement for an entire race of people based on "your" feelings.

I also said that i'm sure many wouldn't care, but i'm positive many do. Cannot discount peoples feelings because it doesn't fit your view point.

So if 50 Irish Americans get offended by Notre Dame's mascot then they should be forced to change their name? Its a mascot that ND claims themselves derived from a common derogatory term long ago.

You are barking up the wrong tree here, I never said it was.

I have constantly said that you cannot speak for everyone and their feelings.

quote:

vast majority

does not equal all.

At this point I don't really know what you are trying to argue with me.

I never once used the word racist or implied it.

No one in this thread is saying the Redskins or anyone should change their name. My issue and others issues lie in people trying to project their feelings on others and saying what they should or shouldn't be offended by. No shite a white guy isn't offended by "Redskins" or the Chinese Bandits get-up.

ULM/NLU should have kept the name Indians instead of changing it to Warhawks.

Never once said or implied anything like this.

If I did please feel free to quote me.

I personally have no horse in the race. I will not being losing any sleep over it.

My original post was commenting that dressing up like "chinese bandits" really isn't an okay thing to do today. If you disagree then you disagree. Everything else you guys are drumming up is on you, but do not project those arguments onto me. I have zero interest in them.

The woman who initiated the latest dust storm around the name Redskins attended a high school on a reservation whose nickname was Redskins. The tribe refuses to change it.
