Wasn't Okie St. A shite show before he got there and then left the keys to Gundy who continued this rise?
When he left the record was 7-5 and the record was 4-7 the next year, so I would say no. It certainly wasn't the caliber it is now.

I don't see him clearly surpassing what he inherited. He received one of the top programs in the country. He get credit for maintaining. As for him having no control over what he inherited, that is true. But he still can't get credit in that area when compared to other coaches who did.

His teams are as disciplined as anyone else's competing for Nat'l Championships, except maybe 1.
I am mostly referring to the ability of the team to execute during games, like substitutions, clock management, etc. Some of that falls on the other coaches, but obviously they report into Les on that. His "prime time" screw ups subtract extra points, fair or not. He had a bad run of some really bad screw ups for a few years.

Yeah the list they were using was from NFl.com i guess. I agree miles should be top 5 on what he has accomplished in his 10 years at LSU not some flavor of the month that this list makes up. I agree though had LSU won it all in 2011 would have been one of the best teams ever in college football and Les would be right behind saban and myer in college football. That was les miles worst game as a coach though but he has learned from it by hiring guys that will get the job done

I once had a boss who always said one "oh shite" trumps ten "attaboys". And I'm a Miles fan. What a humiliating way to piss away one of the best seasons in the history of CFB. Certainly LSU's best.

Thanks for the list.

Lots of mad apparently.

Yeah, if you think 1/9 is the only thing keeping Miles out of this discussion, you are wrong.

I gotta disagree. I see one year of Top Team and mostly meh.
The "cupboard loaded" line is a misnomer also, as Miles inherited 13 commits, or 1/2 a class and this became evident '08 and '09.
2000 Nick Saban 8-4 (5-3) Peach Bowl 22
2001 Nick Saban 10-3 (6-3) Sugar Bowl 7
2002 Nick Saban 8-5 (5-3) Cotton Bowl
2003 Nick Saban 13-1 (8-1) Sugar Bowl 1
2004 Nick Saban 9-3 (6-2) Capital One Bowl 16

What's funny is that plenty of coaches have these. Take a look at what Saban did right before the half against UGA in the 2012 SEC Championship game.

Another pretty high profile frick up was pleading to have one second put back on the clock against Auburn only to have that turn into the game losing touchdown for his team. He directly cost his team a chance at a National Championship with that little argument. That wasn't his only mistake in that game either...

Point being, Miles isn't the only coach in the country that has mistakes during the course of a game. It is mighty easy to point to those mistakes in hind sight.

And no, I am not saying that Miles is a better coach that Nick Saban. It was just an easy example.

Saban
Shaw
Spurrier
Meyer
Stoops
Fisher
Miles
Peterson
Malzahn
Briles

Just outside James Franklin, bobby petrino, mark Richt, Dabo, Hugh freeze, and Kevin Sumlin

Edit*
Some how I forgot dantonio, and the silver fox Snyder. Those 2 belong in top 10

its the way Les loses games. Sometimes it just seems like bonehead, terrible clock management that comes back to kill him!

It could be any number of games in my opinion

My thoughts exactly. If we'd won the Mulligan Bowl, Miles would have the same number of titles as Saban would at Bama, and our program and head coach would be viewed very differently. Miles has a great staff in place though, and I like where we're headed.

Not only 2011, but if we get one more first down against 'shama in 2012, LSU might have been playing Notre Dame in January.
It is LAUGHABLE that just because (1) the media put 'shama in the 2011 BCSNCG; and (2) that 'shama survived by the skin of their scrotum against LSU in 2012, that they have the 2 BCSNCGs that LSU SHOULD have had. Unbelievable luck...
If Miles wins those 2 NCs in 2011 and 2012 - HE is the best coach, not Saban...

There is nothing laughable about this at all. That's how it works. Yeah, they barely beat us, but they beat us. Miles didn't win those 2 championships, Saban did.

I'm not in any way bashing LSU or Miles. I like Miles a lot and wouldn't trade him for anyone in college right now. Miles is, without a doubt, a top 10 coach, and is probably in the top 5. Yes, if Miles wins the 2011 and 2012 National Championships, he would go down as the current #1 coach in college football, but like they say, if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

Les Miles at LSU is one of the 25 best coach/school tenures in the history of college football.

Saban's teams have a habit of doing that. Stoops teams defiantly have a habit of doing that.

Yeah, because no other team has EVER had a problem getting up for a lesser opponent. Especially last year when Bama played Mississippi State and they were lucky to escape with a win.
