I got my first taco there. I remember the local kids show in New Orleans serving the kids Taco Tico tacos and they had to teach them the correct way to eat them - "just like a hot dog".

Thats pretty neat. I can see how this is the end of an era.

the food, the history, the architecture. it's a unique place and it's sad none of the nola food critics are taking note. yeah it's not commanders or galatoire's but for many people, this was their introduction to mexican food and some to foreign food.

I tend to agree. I didn't grow up with Taco Tico but my Uncles did. There's definitely a generational gap in play.

Many that have moved to NOLA would have no idea about Taco Tico. I think many Jeff Parishites that grew up in the 80's have a nostalgic feeling for the place.

No. No. No no no. runningTiger is always the a-hole because he's an awful alter troll. In this case, however, he's right insofar as it's a sad occurrence.

final word about the architecture
there are very few buildings on veterans over 30 years old
katrina flooded many of the buildings in this area as seen in this picture taken across the st from taco tico

i know veterans isnt a pretty street, but it was unique. what it has become since katrina is just like any other 6 lane commercial highway in america - spruced of stucco strips. i'll miss these off the wall architectural types that you dont find in many other places

Yeah but it isn't because of tear downs after Katrina. Most of the buildings are the same.

True, Metairie is on the move. I remember reading something not long ago about the city enforcing new codes along Vets. Dorignacs wasn't up to the new code in some areas and got grandfather in.
