He played football for LSU. There is plenty proof of his existence out there if he wanted to obtain it for these reasons.

People living under an overpass usually get to this point due to issues that are way more complicated than just being lazy. They often suffer from severe mental illnesses and/or issues that don't allow them to function in the real world like you and I would. That said, I'm not familiar with Scott or his situation. But most rational, mentally stable folks are able to function at a high enough level to not be subjected to living under a bridge.

Ehh, I thought it was interesting that the writer just went with his word on that. I'd be rather shocked if the dude really did three years on purely a "marijuana charge."

The writer could have easily determined his real criminal background with just the tiniest bit of digging to verify his statement, but, I'm guessing, realized the "marijuana charge" line better fit his narrative.

Lazy journalism.

Any reason he couldn't get a job at McDonalds or Burger King? Would provide him a steady check and he could at least get a place to put his head at night...

Well, if there are other factors that he won't talk about, like drug addiction, then that would be something that could hold him back from steady employment.

I have no clue what's got him at this stage, but I'm sure there were some wrong turns along the way. Hopefully Tiger nation can pull together and find this guy something to keep him out of harms way. We stress on here constantly how it pays to stay in-state and play at LSU...let's prove it

Doesn't really change anything about what I said though. Without 3 years of jail time, it would be significantly easier for him to find a job now wouldn't it?

I'm assuming you've never been so low that you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

People who assume the homeless could just "get a job flipping burgers" are ridiculous. You do realize someone has to choose to hire you, right?

I can't fathom the line of thinking of a homeless person, but I can assume they are depressed. And I've been depressed. And it's not easy to just snap out of it and right the ship. It takes time, help from others, and more time.

Hopefully TD can pull something together and help him out.

Leviticus 25:35-36
If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you.

Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

eta I'd be happy to help if there is any type of fund, or anyone in LA reaching out to him. I'm in Nashville, and won't be back in LA until the end of the year, but I'll donate.

I drive by this "encampment" every single day on my home. It's the same damn people day after day after day who are panhandling on the corners.

The panhandling explosion is recent phenomenon. It's getting out of control. These people need to be rounded up. They are ruining my happy upper middle class experience.

Others said institutional barriers — not having an ID or a birth certificate — have forced them onto the streets. Scott, a 41-year-old man who said he has been living in a tent under the bridge for more than a year, said that after spending three years in prison on a marijuana charge, he ended up on the streets, without any identification.

it should say "Scott (no last name given), a 41-year-old man who said he has been living.............."

this is not the same man as Malcolm Scott

No I have not. I went to college and graduated and got a job right of school. That doesn't have anything to do with his this thread though.

Well someone not being willing to hire him would be a reason he couldn't work at McDonald's or Burger King wouldn't it? I just asked the question. There had to be a point where his life wasn't that fricked up. At some point, he did have an address. At some point he was clean. There are A LOT, and I will repeat, A LOT of people out there that think that type of work is below them. I worked at McDonald's while I was in high school and while I was attending LSU.

He didn't just go from playing football at LSU and a couple of seasons in the NFL to living under an overpass. There was some time in there where shite started to go south for him.

This is why family is so damn important. If you have the support of family its difficult to see this kind of situation being fostered upon anyone. Forget government and forget charitable institutions. Family is the most important and sustaining group we will ever belong too. That doesn't mean some people won't end up under a bridge regardless but family support usually provides other options.

Maybe he's put himself there by his own hand and truly deserves nothing. Not saying he did, just what if....just being a former Tiger doesn't absolve him from responsibility.

Exactly Charles.
An extreme example is OJ. Should USC help out OJ?

Maybe he should clean himself up and go see Eric Hill and sell some Nissans. A lot of people would be willing to help this guy assuming he is sober and drug free. You have had a lot of advantages Malcolm; you should not be in this situation. Get off you arse and help yourself.
