Polarmatic > Twice The Ice.

Polarmatic is where it's at. Much better quality. It's almost like a chipped ice instead of little cubes. Lasts way better.

As far as either being a business, I have nothing to add.

Even in Louisiana, you're not getting much traffic in Jan-Feb.

The one in my home town seems to get most the business between Oct and Feb. Of course our population doubles with hunters and there are always people icing meat at them

Bump:

I used one of these this weekend and got my thinking again.

Does anyone know any operators? I have a few good locations in mind and can lease a location for $400/month (parking lot).

I just don't see the numbers. Those machines are $150,000 and you've still got rent and a hefty electric bill.

Of course I could be way off on these but:

$150,000 @ 4.5% for 10 years = $1554.00

Plus $500/mo for land lease, $700 for water and $1,000 for electric.

That's 2,500 bags of ice a month (83/day)to break-even. I just don't see it.

I wish I had you before I started my glass business I just bought a bunch of shite and went to work. Took a couple more years than I thought it would to get going.

I believe I Love Bama owns one of these. Curious to hear his comments.

I met a guy about 2-3 years ago that owned 60-70 of these in the Houston metro area. My first assumption was the ones near fishing communities were the most profitable. I buy at least 300 lbs of ice when I go offshore. He told me where he makes the most money is the working class communities where the same work crew shows up everyday and buys 1 bag. He also has backup power on all of his units and made quite a bit of money during hurricane Ike. He said he was looking to sell them all because it became a PIA. He also mentioned he had quite a bit of competition that he did not have when he first started

If the business model doesn't work at $150,000, then why aren't there plenty of used machines available for less cost from failed business owners?

Agree, I still find it hard to imagine the units can sell that much ice.

When I initially ran the numbers it needed like 8-10 vends a day to break even and just pay the bills.

The bigger issue and main deterrant was the maintenance of the units. You have to have someone you REALLY trust servicing the machines because it's majority cash. You also have to be able to go fix the machine ASAP if it breaks because when it's down so is your income.

I would hope you have at least 8 vends a day, but I don't think that's going to cut it. I'm thinking you need many more than that.

A few months ago I researched these and found a great thread on the subject on an entreprenurial web forum. A guy who owned one in Oklahoma gave his updates for a couple of years. It was a fascinating read (that of course I can't find now) but the long and short is: all of the maintenance worries you're imagining are very real, and all of the pessimistic sales projections are very real.

If I had free land I would possibly consider one of the $20-30k units. But it seems like a lot of people get in way over their heads.

A different side of the same coin: there are 3 coin operated car washes for sale near me; I was really interested in buying one until I (luckily) had a chat with my barber who also cuts the hair of the current owner. Said he doesn't make shite on any of them.

Edit: Found the Thread - toward the bottom of page two look for posts by EdSurly.

Did she own the land too? I've always thought of car washes as a short term way to generate cash flow or tax losses on land you planned to hold longer term. Seems like a common strategy in Houston, although they are the hand wash places, not the coin operated.

I believe land is included, but it's really bad land. Located behind shopping centers, off of main streets in two out of the 3 for sale (I'm not sure where the third one is). Also the guy is still way too proud of them - which is why they've been unsold for more than a year.
