I just go to the lot and pick two or three I would buy, leave and call in ask them to fax or email me a price. Then I call their competition and do the same.

Essentially that's what I did. He tried to get me back in though because he was being shady about the color combos on the lot on the toyotas

MOST not all car sales people are outright liars.

Last year I bought one of my kids a truck. Went to a local dealership and they would not deal. Claimed they were not making money at my price blah blah

I told them that was my price and I did not want to waste their time.

Left drove- 15 miles down the road and bought the exact same truck for the price I offered in less than 30 minutes .

My offer had to be fair or the second dealer would not have accepted it.

They are both new car dealers

Your offer may have been fair to the second dealer but not to the first. Not all dealers have the same cost structure.

The dealer who refused the deal is the largest dealer in the BTR area- the dealer who accepted the deal owns one location

still no vehicle.

was in negotiations for Jeep Cherokee, then the guy insulted my intelligence, so I left.

He came in with a figure for the car, then a monthly note. It was a huge difference, so I asked him to break down the monthly figure and how he was getting it. He starts talking to me explaining interest like I'm like 5, so I told him, "I'm not stupid, I know what interest is, that's just A LOT of interest." I told him not to insult my intelligence, then he threw some more numbers at me, but I didn't like any of those.

A bit of a dick move on my part, but I was getting aggravated by the sales tactics and being in the tiny room.

With Independence Day being on a Friday this year, Thursday, July 3 at about 4:00 pm is the perfect time to go into a dealership to buy a car. Those guys are ready to leave and will agree to near anything to get you out of there so they can leave. I speak from experience.

was hoping to have a vehicle before then, but I will wait to get the deal I want.

Every single one of them has talked about how in demand their vehicle is and how they don't have much room to work with. lol, okay

Man, I'm watching you up here. Going to have to buy a vehicle in the best few months and HATE the process.

Last time I tried the Millionaire Next Door method of faxing the dealer what I wanted and requesting an e-mail or fax back. I got one lousy response and I sent it to 13 dealers.

Ended up overpaying.

Had a similar experience when buying the wife's car.

Finance guys: "How much do you want your monthly to be?"

Us: We want your rates and terms, on paper.

Finance guys: "Uhh, we can't do that. Just tell me how much you can pay a month."

We nearly got up and left but they eventually caught on that we weren't idiots. Sad thing is it probably works 9/10 times.

I go to my bank or credit union before hand and get pre-approved for a car loan to figure out what I can get. They'll usually give me a "blank check" within 2 days.

When I go in to the dealership to negotiate the price and trade in, I won't tell them I have my own financing. We'll set on a price, then if/when they try to screw me with financing, I'll haggle a bit, then say I have to make a call. After I make a fake call, I come back saying "my banker said I can get a loan for this amount for X years and X rate. I can have a check in 2 hours."

The 2 times I've done this, the dealership cut the shite and came back to me with the same exact offer my bank gave me. The whole time saying, "I don't know how you got this rate, but we'll match it" or "whatever we have to do to get you in this car"

Some would say it's a dick move because you're negotiating a price based on the pretense that you're financing with them, but in negotiating you take every advantage you can get. They sure as hell try to do it.

frick them, I don't think I've ever met an honest car salesman... Even the ones that were family friends with have tried to pull stupid shite before.

Like you said, they do it to you, so why not do it back to them.

yeah, he got caught up on monthly payment. I guess he thought since I was young, that's all I cared about. He then asked me if I needed to remove options to get the notes better. I told him I wasn't fixated on the monthly payment, that I was concerned about getting a good deal. Asked him if he'd give me a better deal(i.e. % off ask price) if I took out the options, he didn't like that idea, honesty.

Of course, I'm looking at the monthly payment to be where I want it to be, but I want to negotiate the price of the vehicle, not the monthly not.

"I'm losing money on this deal!"

"This is a great deal"

"I'm only making $100 off this deal"

"Here is the invoice, this is what we pay for the car"

Just some off the bullshite I've heard in the past few days. I guess they thought since I'm young they'd just rake me over the coals and take advantage of me.

If you wanted used, I'd tell you to look at Texas Direct Auto... Customer service def isn't the greatest, but they are no bullshite. Take about $500 off of the price they have listed and that is it. They are simply about volume and not quality. They go out to auction and grab cars and flip them like crazy. They also take in hundreds of trades a week. If you know what you are looking for and have common sense when it comes to cars, you can get good deals.

Gotcha. Yea we have the TDI and I've heard they seem to be more reliable.

I think I found a diesel place that will do the oil changes. Although we've still got one more before the warranty is out.

Make sure your place is going to use the right oil. I don't know a ton about it, but I know the oil used in the recent TDI engines is pretty particular. My mechanic actually even buys it from Volkswagen for TDI service.

If you haven't already, you should check out TDIClub.com and their forums LINK . Lots of good info about TDIs.

Last time I checked (12-18 months ago), they hadn't come to a conclusion about whether or not any non-VW synthetics were even appropriate for the newest engines. Hence why I decided to go to a VW/Audi specialist and get my service done with him and VW oil.

Dealers use the 4 square method. Simply put; money down, monthly payment, trade in value & sales price. Take time to read :LINK

When I go on a lot the first question I ask is how long have you worked here? I look for a sales person who is brand new to the dealer- they know nothing and have to talk to Sales Mgr before they can do anything- after a Couple of trips I simply say I need to talk with the Sales Manager.- I cut my deal with the SM- sales guy gets a minimum deal

You have to control the conversation. Be business like, firm and do not put up with crap for one second. Let them know you do not play games and are a serious buyer. DO NOT BUY CARS FROM A SALES PERSON> Get to the Sales Mgr as fast as you can. He is the guy that signs off on every deal.

Once you have him eyeball to eyeball. Tell him you want to buy a vehicle today and the only question is can the two of you agree on a price. You should be able to do that in 15 minutes with a Sales MGR. IF not you are either not good at this or you are at the wrong dealership.

Don't overestimate your negotiation skills. Not everyone is good at this.
