And just like I asked last time, how much bitcoin will they be holding?

ETA: Better yet, just how long do you think they will wait before converting bitcoin payments to USD? I'll set the over under at 0.5 seconds.

From the article it sounds like expedia never sees a bitcoin:
quote:

When a user commits to a hotel reservation and wants to pay, Expedia will hand the user off to Coinbase's Web site, where the customer will log into her personal bitcoin wallet and authorize the transaction. (This should sound familiar to anyone who's used PayPal to buy goods and services online.) Coinbase then automatically converts the bitcoins into dollars and boom, the payment is complete.

Technically, Expedia is NOT accepting bitcoin.

If someone wants to pay in bitcoin, Expedia directs them to a third party who takes the bitcoin, converts it to dollars and then pays Expedia in dollars.

You're wrong again.

Shocking!

That's the way I read it as well. Expedia IS adding a link to their website so you can exchange your monopoly money quicker and send them real money.

You'd think that josh would get tired of looking like an arse every time he starts a thread about bitcoin, but apparently he enjoys it.

WSJ blogs

Expedia, which is using Coinbase for bitcoin processing, won’t hold the digital currency it receives, but that’s not “a statement on bitcoin, pro or con,” Mr. Gulmann explained.

Well, they already did topple Mt. Gox. Wasn't that like a central bitcoin bank of sorts? Gotta start somewhere.

Thats the issue... Does Bitcoin have some advantages over other types of "currency"? Yes it does

But in reality, unless all other currencies collapse and Bitcoin is the only accepted form of payment, it is nothing more than a means of transport... Identical to a credit card. At least with a credit card, I am 100% protected against theft and can dispute charges if the services/goods aren't as described.

I'm thrilled with this news.

Now wiki can book a flight to get back home from Japan. Josh, bless his heart, is trying his very bestest but he just doesn't have the Maestro's knack for making compelling bitcoin threads.

On a side note, the word "bitcoin" is being flagged by my spell check. No respect!

I share your excitement for the concept, just not this iteration of it.

I read that expedia also accepts VISA. I have 3 of those.

How much are they worth?

Oh my God. Now I can't wait to go out and convert my U.S. dollars to Bitcoins so that I can use Coinbase to convert my Bitcoins to U.S. dollars when I want to use Expedia's services. It's a good thing that Coinbase doesn't charge anything for its services, and there are no transaction costs to converting my dollars to Bitcoins. Otherwise it might cost me more to use Bitcoins than dollars to use Expedia's services.

How many unique Bitcoin addresses exist? According to this website, there has never been a day in which as many as 225,000 unique Bitcoin addresses engaged in transactions. Somehow I am skeptical that the number of addresses engaging in transactions is going to increase significantly due to people using Expedia's services.

True story, I used amex very recently to book a hotel in Seattle. It didn't take me to a different site to do any conversions and amex does not charge me a fee at all for the transaction. How is the other way better? I want to seem cool, hip and smart too. Please open my eyes!
