Alot of employers like those three letters behind your name even if you don't do accounting.

I don't have stats but most Fortune 500 CFO's are CPA's.

To be CFO, I imagine it would be helpful, but for 99% of the other jobs out there, it doesn't matter.

I'm sure you're right. It's just a shame you have to sacrifice "interesting" for "opportunity."

Believe it or not, somepeople find financial reporting, budgeting & planning, net present value analysis, and even taxes interesting.

Accounting by a mile.

Accounting will open you up to Big 4 opps,

I have 3 good friends and an ex girlfriend that all worked for PWC consulting then IBM, none of them had accounting degrees, 3 had Finance though, 1 bud had a marketing degree.

If you want a career in an acounting specfic area, accounting is great, but there are literally millions of corporate jobs that are not accounting specific.

Once you have work expirience, most employers care only that you have a degree, not what subject you majored in.

Sure I do. I also need someone to collect my garbage, but I wouldn't want to do it.

Five friends of mine graduated with either a Finance or Accounting degree from LSU.

Finance Degree worked for three years as a loan officier and is not selling life insurance & mutual funds.

Accounting Degree 1 - CPA
Accounting Degree 2 - Internal Auditor
Accounting Degree 3 - Audit Manager at Real Estate Company
Accounting Degree 4 - Corp number cruncher for a large bank

If you want to be an Accountant, do Accounting...Pretty much anything else, Finance.

Best Bet - Finance with Accounting electives.

If you have the time & money - double major! Become a CPA & Financial Advisor...and shoot, then go to law school.

Accounting grads probably have an easier time in the job market initially. Finance majors end up working at banks or investment firms which isn't necessarily bad, but the pay is probably less initially than the accountants get. My brother has a finance degree and he worked himself into a very good job, but it took him about twenty years.
