Vorm wasn't starting at Swansea so probably figured he would at least get Europa Cup action with Spurs. Now why Spurs went and got him, I don't know

Basically he's stated that he feels like he will have a chance to start given the European and domestic cups. I think Spurs want a chance to advance further in all of the cup competitions so they felt they needed to upgrade that position. And, if Lloris gets hurt then we have a decent keeper that can come in that's still in pretty good playing shape.

Matheiu has basically played as a CB for the last couple of years. He was a great LB when he did play there. It was a shame he could never get into the French team.

Now that I look at his wiki you right. There was a time where I seemingly caught every Valencia match and Mathieu was an excellent LB. There was a 0-0 draw from 09 or 10 that was one of the most entertaining scoreless games I've seen.
