Hitting for singles and GIDP with a flat swing doesn't put him top 10, I'm sorry. And he fell way off last year. Don't get me wrong, he's one of my favorite tigers. But let's not get carried away because of one great season.

Raph hit .373 over his 3 year career here with the shitty bats. Yeah, he wasn't a power hitter, but hitting .373 over your career with a .431 season (in which he flirted with .500 half way through it), being the only Tiger to ever lead the NCAA in batting average, qualifies him for Top 10.

Let's not even get into the fact he only struck out 13 times in 232 AB that .431 season...which is absurdly great.

There are plenty of guys with that career average with much better overall numbers including power and speed. He could hit for average which is the only thing these bats don't kill (see Stevenson).

Trust me, I'm not trying to diminish what he was able to accomplish as a hit-for-average player. But just looking at that one thing is too narrow. There's so much more to playing baseball.

Power numbers have fallen off dramatically but averages have also dipped off significantly with the new bats as well. It's not near as easy to have a nice juicy average now as it was pre-2011.

Raph had one of the best single seasons ever in our history, and was really, really good the other seasons as well. He should be Top 10.

For the power hitters whose HRs and Doubles turned into outs and the weaker hitters who can't get away with bad mechanics.

A single season with a very high average doesn't hide the other flaws compared to guys who did much more.

A single season

You keep saying a single season, he had one of the best single season ever, then ALSO had 2 great seasons outside of that one as well.

It's not like he hit .193 then .431.

Again, Rhymes is one of my all-time favorite tigers. He was a team player and one of the best hitters to come through. I'm not denying that. Hell, one of his family members just handed me a regional ticket once because they had a spare and I happened to be waiting for the box office to open.

It's hard to compare pre and post 2011 players. For all we know Raph could have hit 10+ HR and 15+ 2B each year if he played from 2008-2010 instead of 2011-2013.

I guess it's because he was the quiet storm, so to speak. When I think of great tigers, I think Walker, Furniss, Larson, Mouton....and the common theme with them was power. I know, different bats, but HR's stand out over a really good average.

We're not comparing him to guys who hit .193. We're comparing him to the best players in LSU history. You would put him above these:

Furniss
Walker
Cresse
McClure
Barbier
Fontenot
Belle
Holt
Patterson
Johnson
Larson
Mahtook

He was an all-american and deservedly so... but with 100 hits only 15 were for extra bases. Even with these bats, that's a tiny percentage.

I think I probably agree with this.

EDIT: And that's just for hitters. There's no way that Blake is in the top 20 overall Tiger baseball players. Keep in mind that LSU has had 68 players go to the Majors. ( LINK LINK LINK)
