Do they consider anyone from out of state a tourist, or do I count as a tourist if I travl from Baton Rouge to a sporting event, Jazzfest or just to visit the quarter?

Don't blame them. It is a great place to visit. I am helping my buddy at work who is from India plan a trip for Memorial Day. He has never been before

Exactly. Visitor and tourist are two different things. If I or anyone else in Louisiana drives over to New Orleans for business and stays the night I wouldn't consider that tourism.

Dunno, because what's left of the Times Picayune can't even be bothered to link to the actual study. But I don't see why in-state visits shouldn't be counted; the hotels & restaurants get paid the same either way.

Yup, you staying in a hotel you're being taxed as tourist.

I don't know how they would be able to differentiate the two.

About 27.2 percent of hotel visitors made their reservations through hotel web sites, while 21.3 percent used travel web sites and 12.6 percent called hotels directly.
This helps a little I guess. They must have some sort of algorithm that determines an estimated number of tourists based on that, air travel and bar/restaurant sales.

I'm sure they do, lotta dollars on the line in the tourism figures I'd imagine. I can't fully trust numbers though unless I know how they were calculated.

I can believe New Orleans had 9 million visitors though, as in anyone from anywhere who stayed in any motel. Even though hotel registers aren't always accurate either cause somebody could say they have three or two people in a room and just end up only being one.

Just keeps getting better and better.

Waiting for the resident rednecks to say it's a great place to visit, but nobody wants to live there.

Seriously, the city has been adding hotel rooms non stop and they are constantly over 85 to 90% full during this time of the year. Even higher on jazzfest and other big weekends.

Wouldn't it more likely be the reverse scenario, that the person booking a hotel room under-reports how many people stayed in the room?

If there were more hotel rooms, that number would go up even more. 2013 had some big events in this town.

3 Bayou Classics and 3 New Orleans Bowls
The last two New Orleans Bowls probably had more in attendance than the 3 Sugar Bowls.

That's from when New Orleans was actually a great city before it was destroyed post-1960s.

That's fine if that's how you feel. I'm guessing you wouldn't be the kind to think N.O. is 85% full of black wellfare queens and consist of projects and the french quarter like so many of the dumbasses I know from back home think.
