Right now I am in non-profit but the pay sucks.
The State of Louisiana is a non-profit too. The pay kinda-sorta pretty much sucks there too.

Meh, depends on the department I suppose.

And one's expectation of what constitutes being paid well.
The State does not have a reputation of overpaying it's employees; no matter what their tasks or pay level. And they should not overpay. It's the public's money, it should be spent wisely.
Historically (> twenty years ago) the benefits (retirement, comp time, vacation, etc.) associated with working for the State were the real drawing card, those and the low expectation and pressure to exhibit any real productivity. Hopefully it is systemically better today than it was then. It's not at one DMV unit of which I am aware.

I speak from experience (not at the DMV level) that the pay for some departments and projects are very similar to others in the private sector. That's what I meant by being paid well, similar compensation and great benefits (4+ weeks vacation, etc...)
There is a stigma that the state doesn't pay well, but it doesn't apply to the state as a whole. (Healthcare for example pays well in comparison to private sector)

The Department of Revenue and the Department of Economic Development have some pretty good paying jobs.

I had a state job for a while. It was comical how little they paid compared to the private sector. At the same time, I was amazed by how little they expected you to get done in a day. So on a dollar-per-unit-of-work basis, the wage was probably more comparable than it seemed.

To be fair, I could go into consulting in the private sector and make a lot more money, but I'd also have to travel every week.
If I were to go work for a private sector healthcare system, I'd make a similar salary to what I make now (maybe slightly more due to an increase in experience/certifications), but would have decreased benefits.

I have an interview with the state next week and have been looking for a career type job for 16
months. Hope this one works out.
I don't "know" anyone either, but I've known people before and it didn't even get me an interview...
