Casual hockey fans love the Penguins because OMGCINDY is there, and NBC/ESPN can't stop verbally blowing him.

Yeah, I can't vouche for the servey. I found it while looking for that flow chart I posted. That pic actually might help, if you can read it. I'm on my phone so I don't know what it looks like.

Lived in Denver for 4 years. The team was on a slide while I was there but became a fan right away. Always wanted to live in a city with a hockey team. Anyway, they are about to do some big things, maybe even this year and as a previous poster stated, McKinnon is going to be amazing.

I think they fit your criteria perfectly.

FLYERS.

Orange sweater is the best in the game.

No.

Just no.

Mario is a great player, but he is not Gretzky. No one is. Comparing the two is just foolish. (BTW - if you hate the Penguins for trying to argue with a straight face Mario is better than Gretzky, then you should definitely root for the Flyers.)

Nope.
Mario > Gretzky.

Well based on this thread I think I've narrowed it down to Colorado or St. Louis. I'm pretty excited. Gonna ride out the playoffs and go from there.

OK, this is gonna get ugly.

Mario's best season, he scored 85 G and 114 A, just shy of 200 points. He did score 160+ points in 4 different seasons and had 90+ assists three times. He scored 70+ goals twice. Pretty f'n impressive. Mario was a great player. One of the very best ever.

And Gretzky blows him the hell away. Gretazky did reach that 200 point plateau that Mario never hit, and he did it four times. To compare to that 160+ point level, Gretzky did that NINE times. Heck, in 1985-86, he had 161 assists. He had 90+ assists three times... plus another ten times. In fact, he had at least 100 assists in ELEVEN CONSECUTIVE seasons. He also cleared 70 goals four times.

Gretzky rewrote the record book. He has more career assists than anyone else has points. Now, had Mario stayed healthy, he might have prevented that awesome record, but maybe not. He needed to score 240 points in those three seasons he missed to have as many points as Gretzky had assists. Heck, they rewrote the rulebook to stop Gretzky (we still see it today with matching minors on a power play does not reduce play to 4-on-3, an Oiler specialty or in the creation of the "office" behind the net by shrinking the nets to give more room back there)

Gretzky was hockey god.

If both of these teams happen to win their first round series, which is in no way guaranteed or even likely considering the unpredictability of NHL playoffs, they'll play each other next. That would be best case scenario for you since you'd be able to watch them play each other and will prob gradually just start cheering for one team more and more as the series moves along.

You will have to decide between a wife beating goalie in Varlamov and a whiny bitch goalie in Miller (I'm only basing the whiny bitch part on the Lucic hit but I feel like he's been a whiner other times).

Gretzky had better teams and played a lot more games than Mario.

Long shot but go for the Oilers:

quote:

-Can't be too good. I don't want to be a frontrunner/bandwagoner/etc. So it can't be like the best team in teh league

Oilers are the worst team in pro sports over the last 5 years

quote:

-Ideally, would have something of a good history.

-5 Stanley Cups, last recognized Dynasty by the NHL
-Arguably the best player of all time

quote:

-Has potential to be good in the near future and/or has a star player

-Taylor Hall or any of the number of 1st overalls we are sure to accumulate over the next decade

quote:

-Nice color scheme/cool city.

Blue and Orange is sweet. Edmonton is a dump though

Overall, the Oilers may not be the best choice but if you want to hop on with a team that is absolutely horrendous and may get better someday (It has to happen... right?) with a good history the Oilers fit the bill.

Colorado and Dallas are good teams, both very young, and will continue to be good for the next few years.

I'm a lifelong Pens fan, but pull for Dallas as they are the only Texas team (my home state)

Gee, he only got to play with five Hall of Famers and be coached by another. How did he manage? The 1990-91 Penguins are one of the most talent loaded teams in the history of the sport. The "better team" argument doesn't fly.

Now, I'll give him a pass for cancer, but staying healthy is a skill. And Mario was always hurt. Hey, if only Lindros knew how to strap his helmet on, he'd have more points than Lemieux, right?

But even if we do waive a magic wand and make Mario fully healthy. Let's turn his 915 games into about 1375 by adding his numbers half again (Gretzky played 1480). This means Mario had no decline and was always at his peak, so this is beyond generous and completely unrealistic. It way overrates Mario, as it gives him credit for being in his peak when he WAS in decline from ages 30-33:

Multiplying by 1.5 gives him 1035 G and 1550 A for a career 2585 assists.... which is STILL less than Gretzky, who actually, for real, scored 894 G and 1963 A for 2857 career points.

I hated Gretzky, who had the most punchable face in NHL history, but he was far and away the best player ever.

There is literally no argument.

I'm just going to go ahead and say that everything Baloo has said thus far in the thread... Is totally correct and I agree wholeheartedly with.

Cheer for the Blues. Gretzky is the greatest (and he played for the Blues at one point, though the fricker didn't get along with Brett Hull, which was stupid... two of the best players in the goddamn league on the same team at the same time and the bastards couldn't make it work, but I digress).

A. No one liked Brett Hull
B. That's just the inherent Blues-iness overpowering everything.
C. You know how this ends for Ryan Miller, right? He's gonna allow nine goals in a Game 7 or something. And then sign with the Red Wings.

avs it is

Nah not really. I've got a lot of thinking to do.

Btw not that any of you care, but I went through this exact same process 7 years ago with the NFL (been a college guy since diapers, never really cared much for the NFL but wanted to get a team to pull for) and settled on Miami. I'm happy with the decision.
