Friend had them and finally narrowed down the problem to chewing gum with artificial sweetner.

Yes actually, I was in a near fatal car wreck 3 years ago on I-10 near LaPlace headed back to BR. I walked away without a scratch although I should probably be dead and ever since then I get vertigo crossing the spillway.
You may have developed Gephyrophobia--a phobia of bridges.
I think I have this a bit and it's getting worse. No traumatic incident happened to me, but over the years I have gradually started having slight panic attacks on high bridges, like the Horace Wilkinson (New) Bridge or even the 1-12W to 1-10E crossover at the split. I don't have problems with driving on the Bonnet Carre or the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, just really high bridges. I even get nervous just thinking about driving over them. It sucks because I've lived all my life along the Mississippi River, and it feel likes I'm kind of trapped on one side. That's the only time I get vertigo, and I'm not even really afraid of heights.

Anyone ever get bouts of vertigo? As in short episodes where you feel dizzy or off balance?
I do get light headed from time to time, like when I stand up quickly...but I don't think that is vertigo...
I have a couple of coworkers who get legit vertigo on occasion and it is disabling...they can't even stand up and vomit repeatedly for hours on end...not something that I would want at all...

My wife (no pics) gets it sporadically and not as intense as some of you describe. Has had some relief from treatments from a Physical Therapist.

It's more of tunnel vision that makes it happen

I get it sometimes. Its awful!!!!
If you get it find a Dr. who knows how to do an epley's maneuver. It takes about 5 minutes and is very slow and gentle but makes a huge difference!

I experienced vertigo once after a flight from Baltimore to Phoenix. Only lasted for about 6 hours before abating but easily one of the worst experiences of my life. I cannot imagine living with it long term.

Good to know it happens to other people. I don't get it too bad, and it's not after standing up. Today I got a mild dizziness spell at a get together and it became hard to socialize. Luckily it went away. A few weeks ago I woke up once to a terrible dizziness. Just wondering if this is common or not.. But seems like it happens to a lot of OTers.

Yes. Mine was positional when I looked up and worse when I looked down. Fortunately it only lasted a day or two and so far only twice. Was a crazy feeling. I have known people who had it no matter what they were doing and were pretty much immobilized.

If your chest feels heavy combined with dizziness you should go to the ER without delay. Heaviness in your chest needs to be addressed with your doctor. If you haven't seen one yet you are going to see a cardiologist. Not anything to play around with.

Do you get the nystagmus sometimes associated with it? This by far was the worst aspect of my vertigo episode. Just opening your eyes was a fresh hell of nausea and dizziness.
