what is the best shaving cream(at a reasonable price) on amazon?

I like the tubes of Proraso for $10 - green for mentholated, red for sandalwood - I like them both, but Mrs. Midnight prefers sandalwood - so, red it is.

I gave myself my first DE shave last night. I got a Merkur 38C and used Proraso sandalwood, also. Mighty fine shave. I was very pleased.

I went around Christmas to the Fulton St one and I'm 80% sure it was not some disposable or Mach. My memory sucks though and can't remember exactly but I know it wasn't a normal razorblade from cvs.

Muddying the waters for the OP.

They are great but up a notch on the price scale.

If you want to shave "OT Baller Style" try Santa Maria Novella shave cream. $71 for a tub of shave cream. That's the most ludicrous price I've found yet. Their cologne is $140 too I believe. And that ain't with a gift pack. No aftershave or deodorant stick with it.

I just received my amazon order last week of a puck TABAC shaving soap and it is great! Proraso green has been my go to with a badger brush and Merkur 34C with Feather blades. I am going to Aidan Gill in New Orleans to pick up something new.

I would never get a shave at Aidan Gill. Amateurs don't know how to use a straight razor so he pimps the "modern disposables"

That's disappointing. Can anybody shave with disposable? Meaning they do not have to be a "barber"? There is apparently a difference in cosmetology and barber"ing". Essentially it involves use of a razor. Which can no longer be a straight. Has to be a Shavette/injectable.

I just went ahead and ordered a badger brush, a tube of the red prorarso shaving cream and a jar of white proraso shaving soap. i'll try this stuff in conjunction with my regular cartridge razor that I'm generally happy with, but I'm sure i'll end up ordering a safety razor. i have a merkur 34c and jagger de89 sitting in my amazon cart. my neck is the only area i get razor burn, so i'll see if the new shaving cream solves the problem on its own, if not ill go the safety razor route.

do you guys use any pre or after shaves as well? it seems the pre shave might be overkill, especially since i don't have a very thick beard.

If have used pre shave oil. Art of Shaving sampler.

Honestly a great pre shave for use with a hot towel is just scrubbing face with a good hand made glycerine soap. Light on the alcohol or fragrances and minimal ingredients with glycerine being first or second.

Nothing wrong with using quality soaps with regular cartridge blades. That's really the main thing. I could do without a DE razor if I had to but I will always use better creams and soaps now with brush. Using canned stuff is robbing yourself IMO. If you are using that you may as well just use Ivory Soap on your face like a deodorant stick and shave it. That's a method I read before that is damned good. And the only way to get cheaper than ivory soap is to shoplift.

Most of the brands we are talking about have been around since the 1800's. Society decided to do things faster, cheaper, and dirtier about 50 years ago. Turns out the euros had shaving right 100-150 years ago.

I might consider shaving my beard for a shave like this one.

I will get a straight razor shave one day. Old crusty dude with a steady hand.

If ever in England too I would love to go down Jermyn Street and get a shave and haircut.

I'm getting pretty good at it. I think I'll start offering straight razor shaves to my friends and family. Maybe that will be my retirement gig. You know, just something to stay busy.

"Art of shaving" is just a marketing ploy.

Real wetshavers use authentic products primarily from Europe, but US manufacturers are growing. As a wetshaver myself, and I have been since 2006, I find it very enjoyable.

you can do it yourself. I've been shaving with a straight blade for about a year and a half.

The first time is a bit nerve racking, but as with everything, practice makes perfect.

True. Their products are ok. But they are no better than Proraso. And arguably worse. Problem is they are priced in between GF Trumpers and Truefitt&Hill.
