So this could possibly be one reason for low pay at these businesses because of the loss of money involved because of thievery? Would be nice to know just how much money is lost to these merchants because of criminals in a year's time.

You would be shocked at the amount of $$$ a decent sized retailer loses to theft and process breakdowns in a year....

I crossed paths with a new GM who was taking over Cortana Walmart back in the day due to theft. He told me that that location had lost over 1m the year prior. That is by far the largest that I have heard of.

That's a lot of stealing on a nationwide basis. Oh well, let's spank them on the hand and send them back out into the streets.

So every shoplifter should be given an escort out the store to his ride along with a kiss on the arse. That is about par for the course with your post history in my head.

This.

Plus, I used to tell my managers they would still get their full pay, so just follow policy.

Their pay wasn't affected by shrink.

Wut? The law is completely on the side of the retailer - it's just not implemented in a corporate sense.

An ex of mine was the GM of Old Navy in BR several years ago. Tons of people would overtly stuff their bags full of clothes. Well, you knew that they would be walking out of the store with said clothes so she was told to "educate" her team by confronting them prior to leaving the store and say "Can I hold those clothes for you until you're ready to check out?", but they could never follow them outside.

It's an image thing and nothing more. They are fearful that if people start getting tackled for theft, it would taint their business - but per law, that is theft.

Damn right, it would. But, what is fricked up in America now ... is that is considered okay to steal from people who can stand to lose it. So ... that's how you get folks on here saying, "Hey, Kroger has lots of money ... so no big deal."

But ... stealing is stealing ... it's wrong ... it's fricked up ... and I hate a goddamn thief and wish death upon him or her.

Since 1 Jan of this year, the construction business that I run has been hit for well over $50K in theft loss, vandalism, etc.

I would stay up until 2AM watching live video of our yards. I would get calls at 0430 during the week or even 0800 on a Saturday....letting me know that we'd been robbed.

Cops are fricking worthless ... because in general, they take the same attitude as many in this forum ... i.e. stealing? so what? you have lots of money.

Well ... that theft DOES have an impact on our business and all of our employees. It affects raises I can give, equipment I can buy, capital imporovements, bidding strategy ... not to mention ... health, attitudes, etc.

Yeah ... sure ...

And ... I am not kidding ... just this second, I got a call from Tyco ... because the security beams at one of my facilities have been breached.

So ... now I have to deal with that ... on a Saturday ... because too many worthless motherfrickers think it is okay to take what is not theirs.

So, I hope they die. All of them.

Here we come with the second hand anecdotes.

Shrinkage is a part of all huge corporations & is figured into accounting. 1) Employee Theft is about 50% of it ,then 2)shoplifting,3) damage, 4)clerical/pricing errors ,etc....

While this idiot was being a hero AND breaking his company's policy his employees were probably laughing because they (and Managers) steal far more than the few dollars a shoplifter takes.

If Wal-Mart thought shoplifting was such a crippling blow to their tens of billions in profit they would hire trained security Shrinkage is a small part (1.5 % or so) of doing business any place on the planet & Corporations understand this & their policies reflect this..

He was likely fired for violating co policy related to employee safety. Kroger doesn't want it's employees risking their safety over merch...not worth it.

This is not an indication that the law is on the shoplifters side.

Every multi-billion dollar corporation is smarter than idiots like this manager, you & Poli- board heroes. Shrinkage(which is mostly employee theft & not shoplifting ) is a part of business & their policies reflect that.

The GOP has so indoctrinated you guys to defend Corporations /Billionaires that you really are willing to lay down your lives to save them $20 from a shoplifter. Not only do you think it's okay to defend a Multi-Billion dollar corporation with your lives(over petty theft) you blame lawyers for Krogers policy.

Even the Corporation thinks it's stupid & not worth it & put it in their company policy for that reason.

I know you guys have been indoctrinated to love Corporations/Billionaires , but even they don't believe it's worth it to give your lives for them. They know sHrinkage is a part of business & Employees cost them far more than shoplifters.

Yeah. Let all of the petty shoplifters get away with their petty crime. I enjoy paying higher prices as a result so they can get their free stuff.

Interesting Shoplifting story

Will to Win

I met Reston 2 years ago at a seminar he was a speaker at. He has a good message about not giving up and willing yourself to survive an attack.

This attitude is exactly why America is on a downward spiral. It really has reached a tipping point with dumb arse opinions like this taking over.

Because an employee went face to face with a shoplifter who was armed? Krogers isn't stupid, what they stole was replaceable, a human life isn't.
