Probably more about increased humility through being temporarily deprived of food. Like another poster said, fasting helps make one more spiritually aware.

Had a buddy who did a 40 day fast. He was so weak at the end he couldn't get out of bed. I remember him saying after a certain point you don't feel hunger, but if you do you have to immediately stop and start eating.

TMI: Day 18 he pooped

Edit: he was drinking water the entire time.

I don't eat breakfast or lunch on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday.

Mainly because I think the official requirements (two smaller emals and one full meal, and no meat) are watered down and wussified.
