much of the advice in here is outdated thinking (if it ever were the "norm")

I don't really see what was so radically different about your "up-to-date" advice versus everything else that was said here by all of us other poor outdated yokels.

This but you can sub out the black shoes/belt with dark brown/burgandy and the could also sub out the grey pants for tan dress pants, all a matter of preference.

For an MBA school, you can bet most people will be in jeans or khakis. what you wear to work is probably fine.
I was a finance major and spent plenty time in this environment. I disagree, MBA students are competitive over-achievers. The kind of people who prepare for a small reception like they'll be entertaining the queen. MBA business casual is on the higher side of the business casual scale for sure.

I've always been told to match the socks with the pants. Grey slacks, grey socks. Am I wrong?

I went to a top 25 b-school, and I never felt that they dressed up too much. A few people wore a suite to class everyday but its not like they faired better on the job market.

I always overdress. People notice the best dressed and the worst dressed. Don't be the latter.
