I'll try to make it simple.

Jaywalking in against the law in most places, but rarely enforced...because to do so is almost in all cases way more trouble than simply saying, "Hey...wait for the crosswalk sign."

It's about scale of infraction versus scale of reaction. The guy may have, by the letter of the law, "stealing" soft drinks. But did that dollar amount warrant the reaction? I'd say most reasonable people who give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he really didn't know would say, no.

I get all that, but I highly doubt this is the first time someone got caught taking a free refill form there. Occasionally someone actually gets in trouble for breaking minor laws. If he doesn't like it, maybe he should make sure he's not the one in a million that actually gets prosecuted from now on.

I bet they had a problem with the construction workers in general strolling in and out all day refilling their drinks.

Looking at the guy, he was just easy to spot and had an example made out of him.

fed gov's fault the guy stole.

only a government-owned facility would accost a guy getting a refill at the soda fountain and charging him a $525 fine.

he's a construction worker for god's sake on his lunch break.

i can't possibly imagine this scenario happening anywhere else in the known universe except bizzaro-fed-world.

Get that rationality out of here. This is just another case of the big bad government shitting on its citizens.

ree REFILLS for all construction workers

he bought the drink.

eta its so damn funny this ticket is more than speeding which actually could cause a legitimate accident.

eta2 soda machines cost less than a penny for a 16oz refill which is why they're out where people can come and refill and their leisure everywhere except bizzaroFED world

He didn't buy the one he stole, by his own admission.

I have an even easier solution if that's the case (that people walk up and give themselves free refills)...have actual hospital workers fill drinks rather than making it accessible to everyone that can walk up and do it themselves. I've always kind of assumed that if a business is going to outsource the filling of my drink to me rather than having an employee do it, they are doing it as a cost cutting measure (why pay an employee if our customers will do it themselves?!?) then they must also assume I'm not expecting to have to walk over to the counter and ask them to charge me again for filling my own drink.

Honestly...I'm just arguing this point to have something to do. I really don;t care what they do with this clown, though I do think their reaction was wildly overboard.

Still, it kind of is.

I bet the federal cop sat in there most of the afternoon trying to be incognito waiting for some one to pull the drink heist. And when they did, oh boy we got us a live one! Write him a $525 ticket, we're in debt nearly 17 trillion dollars!

fed cop probably pulls six figures to sit on his fat arse and watch people steal a 1 cent refill of a drink they already bought.

I don't disagree with any of that.

What in the bloody hell is wrong with paying after getting the refill as opposed to before? What if he paid for it before and then they were out of what he wanted? I bet they wouldn't be very cooperative in refunding his $

Are there more cases of this? Doesn't seem likely they'd go through all that trouble to write one ticket.
