if you're going to compare us to another country, at least pick England or Canada or somewhere that's even remotely close to us demographically and culturally

Your mo. Bow out. I'm down for a constitutional debate. Just want to know the relevance of your stat to our country....constitutionally

note a correlation between gun control and homicide by gun.

What do u want to debate about the constitution? I could care less about debating it though. Doesnt mean I love it or hate it, just zero interest in debating how sacred or not sacred it is or isn't.

Why is this difficult to understand? Isn't the intentional homicide rate more important than number of homicides by gun?
The U.S. is pretty middle of the road when it comes to overall homicide rate.

Sacred has nothing to do with it. If you want to include stats from japan on a debate about us gun control...it would stand to reason we should include a debate on other areas of the constitution. Gun control isn't an issue in a bubble.

How did you think this thread would go, honestly?
And Japanese police forces are well known to falsify reports to keep numbers low FYI, there was a link but you kind of ignored it while rant in about being open to sources of information.

You'd have a hard time finding two more different countries than Japan and the US in many ways that have a bearing on gun issues. Lack of gun ownership is as old in Japan (older) as gun ownership is in the US. Others have already mentioned other factors like demographic differences and crime reporting issues.
Japan also has very tough drug abuse laws and low incidents of drug abuse. Yet tough drug laws in the US seem to accomplish little in the way of relatively lower abuse.

Everyone owns guns in my neighborhood, and not one murder in 25 years. How is this possible?

Swiss have strict laws about carrying a firearm. Totally illegal to carry one that is concealed in ANY way. They have a system that basically says leave your guns at home. Very different than ours.
What percent of the gun crime in the US is inner city poor minorities?

so guns are banned on an island and they still had 2 gun deaths

They actually can own long guns for hunting.
In Japan you can own a shotgun for hunting purposes. After having a permit and a shotgun for 10 years you can then get a permit and apply to own a rifle (bolt action only).
Their self defense laws are super strict. You can only respond to a threat with the same amount of force that the criminal is carrying/wielding.
For instance, in Japan if a guy breaks into your home wielding a bat, you must attempt to find a way out of the home first. If you cannot do so, you can only defend yourself with a similar weapon.
If not both of you will face charges regardless of the outcome or the criminal's intentions.
There is a Japanese guy on Youtube that I subscribe to that reviews knives. He has a short video on his self defense options in Japan and explains the rules in this video: Self Defense in Japan

Have firearms become more, or less available to the general pubic since 1950?
This is a cultural problem. Not a legislative problem.

And according to this Japan has the 4th lowest intentional homicide rate.
Which was the reason for my comment about them not having the "kill each other" culture. The OP's numbers shouldn't be surprising.

Well, to be fair, being a jarhead, he's probably traveled to more countries than 99% of this board. Very likely spent some time in Japan. So it's really kinda stupid to call him ignorant when discussing foreign lands.

The only gun related violence in Japan is Yakuza related (and it's rare). I can only recall one incident where someone was killed with a gun that wasn't connected with the mob.
