*speaks out of side of mouth* "I think we should pick Xavier."

Another vote for the guard.

Between Filo and Jernigan, I vote Jernigan.

Based on value at the time of pick and future cap implications of current starters...

Our mock pick will be Xavier Su'a-Filo OG UCLA

but Jernigan is very good value as well.
No doubt, but if I'm looking at the whole picture, we have a very cheap Jenkins and Hicks for at least 2 more years, while we have no one(if Lelito gets the center job) to replace Grubbs.

If they are close, guard all day.

So we are picking a backup in the 1st round.

I get the need to replace the money in Grubbs/Nicks, but that's not happening for at least a year. Ideally, you really want your 1st Rounder to contribute from day one. ANd he won't for a year unless someone gets injured.

Looks like the guard wins.

Pick him and we can move on.

Grubbs can be cut this year if the rookie is good. And we've taken guys that have not played full time before in the first, so I don't buy the needs to be an immediate starter bull shite.

0-1 year of sitting for huge cap relief and an upgrade is definitely worth it.

We are moving on in the Mock thread.

To answer your point, I don't see any available need positions with his type of value. Since these mocks are impossible to bring trades in on, we took who we thought would help the saints the most, not just this season.

That's true, but we are in immediate "win now" mode. Ideally, you want your 1-3rd round picks to be immediate contributors. OG in the 4th round makes more sense to me, but whatever works.

no prob with the position, it's the value. Everyone was saying Saints go BPA. This is a stretch pick when there were two guys rated in the #15-20 range passed over.

would definitely be an interesting pick going with a guard.

still have a strong chance to take a center later on too.

so you'd have great depth at guard or maybe even cut Grubbs?

those aren't mine, that's national consensus. It's not even message board consensus from earlier poling. THAT would be Verrett or Matthews in that scenario. No biggie, it's ST draft week

The likely endgame would be cutting grubs to save the money and push it to Jordan/Hicks/Gallette etc.

+1

I do like Sua-Filo though, but it's a year early to spend a 1st round pick on an OG...Saints are in win-now mode. It's hard to believe they would take a bench warmer with their 1st.

If he's the truly the undisputed BPA, trade back or something...
