Why do people keep saying this? The Saints have drafted for need in the first round. Cam Jordan, Mark Ingram and Sedrick Ellis were all needs at the time.
You can't prove that those players weren't the top value for the saints front office; and matching need was merely coincidence.

I'm not too big of a fan of Ealy but I would much rather have him than Dee Ford. I'd rather draft a P in the first than Ford.

Butler only has 1 yr left on his contract, and junior will probably hit 12 sacks this yr and expect a pay day. We only have so much money so it makes sense if we take at least 1 pass rusher in this draft to fill the hole we're probably going to have down the road. It doesn't warrant a 1st though, especially with how many moves we've made this offseason for the defense. CSP will want some toys of his own.

Ellis was a need pick. Both Jordan and Ingram were value picks as both fell well below where they were expected to go.

Why? Ealy does not have the burst or natural pass rushing abilities Ford does. Ford also played with a lot of freshman this year whereas Ealy played with Sam on the other side.

saints traded up to get Ellis.

traded back into the 1st round to get Ingram.

thankfully a bunch of teams wanted QB's in the 2011 draft. That helped Cameron Jordan slide to us.

Gabbert to the Jags.
Ponder to the Vikings.
Jake Locker to the Titans.

that was weird year though. A lot of QB's in the draft class and there was the uncertainty because of the lock out.

I'm not going to try and find it, but I remember Payton saying that they had player tiers moreso than a hardcore numbered ranking. They would then draft for the most needed position if multiple players in that tier were still available, but wouldn't hesitate to take, say, a "Tier 2" luxury player over a "Tier 3" need.

Sometimes BPA is used to cloak BPA at a position of need. Many of the teams picks in the last several drafts have fallen under BPA at a position of need. So in reality, both you & Suntiger are correct.

At the moment,I feel like we should trade back if no one falls...Imagine doing that and being able to get a combo of Matthews and Van Noy with our first 2 picks from trading back.

Ford is a bit of a tweener.. Too small to be a 4-3 end but not quite the right build for a 3-4 OLB. He has almost no coverage experience as a LB and the little he does have is not promising.

So he's either a DL that we obviously don't need because of our crazy youth and depth there, or a LB that can't cover, which is the opposite of our need at LB. We need coverage ability.

And I hate saying this, but I just have a feeling he will be a bust. He wasn't a 1st round possibility until the senior bowl where he played above his talent level. Dunno. Just feels like the kind of guy people get enamored with as then the next thing you know we have another Jonathan Sullivan or Sedrick Ellis.

Ealy has been a popular choice for us in a lot of expert mocks.

When will people learn that mocks are just someone's opinion & that the mocks are usually wrong especially in their projections towards the end of 1st round?

but OLB/DE really wouldn't be as bad of a pick early on as a lot of people are making it out to be.
A pass rusher is never a bad pick(if they are legit), but I think where the problem comes in is these "experts" perceive us having a lack of rushers when it's far from true.

Pass rusher is lower on the needs list, but you never fully ignore it, especially if a guy is clear BPA.

Yeah he called them bubbles. They group players into bubbles and take the highest need out of the players left in that bubble.

This came up last year when asked about Jarvis Jones and Payton said he wasn't even in the same bubble of players as Vaccaro, and then named some positions of players that were(DT, WR, CB?, etc.)

You wouldn't by chance have a link to where Payton said this by chance? Sounds interesting & I would like to see the entire discussion.

Not 100%, but I think it was on nola(tp). But it's such a bitch to search on there.

Also don't remember if it was an article or a video. For some reason I think it may have been a video.

I gotcha. Payton's explanation on the team's drafting process was interesting & I just would have liked to have viewed the interview in its entirety. I'll search around to see if I can find it. Thanks anyway.

I guess it just depends on what you expect to see on Day 1. IMHO, the talk about someone like Mosley falling to 27 is absurd. If you buy into us going after another edge rusher, Ealy is a possibility. I, for one, haven't resigned to us taking WR in the first, is all.

If I get some free time at home later I'll try to look and post it here if I find it. It was definitely interesting to hear how they group them in bubbles instead of hard ranks.
