No he was an UFA.
Just remembered why(as he only has 3 years with us). He was a RFA last year for us. I don't think you can play out the tender and be a RFA again(which is what he did).

Sad that we did not think the guy that we put on the field as a starter for the last few years was even worth retaining on a one year league minimum deal for depth.

Where did you read that he got vet min?
Posted on 4/6/14 at 7:16 pm to Rand AlThor
I don't see that anywhere either, but I wouldn't be shocked if that's what he got because it's a 1 year and he's expected to be a backup.
Likely means Goodwin's price would be vet minimum too if that's true.

De la Puente, the Saints’ starting center the last three seasons, agreed to terms Sunday on a one-year contract for the minimum-salary benefit with the understanding he is coming in to play behind starter Roberto Garza, a captain and the leader in the offensive line room.

Good. I wanted a new center anyway and this ensures there will be one. I find it hard to believe someone will be worse. Worse case scenario is we replace him with someone just bad. Best case scenario we are finally able to protect Brees again. The biggest problem on offense last year was the complete inability to protect Brees. He got sacked 10 more times than any other time in his career.

Damn, our front office must have told him that we have no interest in having him back. He knows that he's going to be a backup in Chicago. Here, he would have been the starter unless we drafted someone. Some people have high hopes for Lelito but he's been pretty bad.

"He made $2.02 million with the Saints last season, but they were looking to re-sign him for less and put him in a competition with Tim Lelito for the starting job. He also had an offer to be a backup for the Lions. The Bears will give de la Puente a $65,000 signing bonus, the maximum in a minimum-salary benefit deal, and guaranteed $100,000 of his base salary."
Damn the market was dead for him. Two backup offers and one offer with no guarantee to start. Probably felt insulted by our offer, leaving the Bears as the best scenario of the remaining two choices.
So I imagine DLP was option #1 in FA but we didn't push hard to keep him at all. Now option #2...
Edit:
I would not say Lelito has been pretty bad. He had one bad start while dealing with an injury(and still probably played better than Evans would have at that time) and one good start.
But the key is neither was at center. Still, I believe it when it was said DLP would be competing for the starting job with Lelito if brought back. They are still high on him.
His role here would have been undefined and he may not have even been guaranteed a spot if he lost. I think that likely made a guaranteed backup spot with a big possibility to start the next year more attractive.

The first game he started he twisted his ankle early in the game (or so I've heard). The next start he did a lot better. That's not a lot to go on, but it was more than dlp had under his belt when he finally started.
