re: Travaris Cadet The New Darren Sproles?

If I remember right Paddy I was all on board the Cadet train in making the cut in 2012. And I think it was your nemesis who called me out as to why. Will try to find it.
As to Cadet after this last pre season I didn't think he would even make the team. A 6'1" 205lb'er doesn't seem the likely replacement for Sproles but its a long off season and if CSP gave him things to work on that would make him more of a threat then perhaps its possible.
With MI in his last year. PT getting older and a very young Prob and Cadet I'm positive CSP will bring in more competition at the RB spot via draft and UDFA. Several more.

re: Travaris Cadet The New Darren Sproles?

Well, PFF confirms that he's a much better receiver than runner.

As for his physical attributes, I can't say.
But I think he'd have trouble replacing what Sproles could do physically.

On the flip side, sproles lost a lot of explosiveness last season, and still produced like a mother.
So maybe we don't need cadet to shoot out of a cannon.

ive been saying i think Cadet has been kept around for that role. And he has shown great flashes in the preseason, esp 2012.

How's his route running doe

Sproles was extremely quick into his break.
Huge reason for his success.

They are very different players. That doesn't mean Cadet won't play the role.

What? Why? because he was undrafted and you've never heard about him?

Not at all. He's a decent player, but he's never shown to be a great talent. He's had some nice plays in pre-season but so have tons of other guys. Unlike many of them, his college tape wasn't great, but good.

He's not the athlete at their level and people act like Sproles was chopped liver before coming to the Saints which isn't true.

I hope Cadet proves his doubters wrong, but talent-wise he's just not as good as his two predecessors. That doesn't mean he can't be an adequate player in this system.

Again, pre-season success doesn't always equal regular season/post-season success by players.

I don't think we need another small guy, just someone with short area quickness that can get some YAC.

I don't know how cadets role will expand but the coaching staff has held on to him because they like him. He definitely has the ability to do what you are asking for...short area quickness and YAC

But man, I've just seen nothin from that guy besides that one long kickoff return. Which I believe was in the Niners game this year...I think?

yeah, that return set up a score. You gotta figure it was one of the key plays in the game since that one came down to the wire.

and really... can we name any other significant kick/punt returns from this past season?

i'm wondering if Cadet is going to get a crack at being the lead punt return man now.

kickoffs? Meh. He had almost as many attempts as Sproles did last year. I guess he's going to remain back there at get a few chances here and there.

Sproles and Cadet only combined for 21 kickoff returns all of last sesason.

Punt returns are becoming more important.

re: Travaris Cadet The New Darren Sproles?

yeah, we could have used a few more of those last year considering most of the losses came down to one possession game.

NE/CAR games stick out. Even the Jets game in a way.

maybe a few more yards here and there and you at least give yourself a better chance to get into field goal range.

but then... you gotta worry about making the FG too. Hartley

Graham did alright but I just hate it that when we needed him the most against the toughest defense in football he missed 2 FG's.

Better defense means less points scored means less kick returns. Just saying

re: Travaris Cadet The New Darren Sproles?

oh yeah, I hear you.

But some of it is because we're seeing more and more touchbacks from kickers blasting the ball through the endzone. Or one of our guys catching it 5-6 yards deep in the endzone and having to take a knee.

True, when they moved up the yardage on the kickoff it created more touchbacks and most NFL kickers have rocket legs to get it out of the back of the end zone most of the time.

I just don't get this kind of thinking.

Who was Pierre Thomas or Marques colston coming out of their draft class? They were nobodies who were gonna be hard pressed to make the team.

Lance Moore? Khiry Robinson?

Preseason games were huge in them making the team. Cadet freaking showed out in 2012 preseason. He hasn't had a chance to play much since then. Trust what you see.

Are you asking PT to be Deuce or Ricky?
Colston was underrated because he was a tweener. That was his knock.

Everyone you list is a contributor and a good player, but you are ignoring facts and looking at small snippets (preseason) to claim this guy will be as good as both the previous scat backs on the team. Bush is an all-time physical talent. Sproles brought completely different aspects to the table than Cadet.

Cadet is a good player, but if he brought as much as you think to the table, he'd have shown more involvement just like Robinson saw later in the season or when Sproles was out. He simply didn't.

I think he'll be an asset, but he isn't going to replace what Sproles brought or get even close.

I'd say his preseason showing outs weren't nearly as impressive as Thomas, Robinson, Ivory etc. He looked like a guy that earned a spot on the team but lacks the athleticism to contribute significantly. Those other guys jumped out at you.

What facts am I ignoring?

How did those guys make the team? Honest question.

They were great in the preseason. And it translated to the regular season.

Cadet hasn't had the opportunity to play yet. Not because he isn't talented, but because he has been behind more expensive veterans.

I haven't argued about what I think he'll bring to the table, as far as what I think his numbers might be. Im just defending him as a capable player in that role. The coaches obviously think so.

How many homegrown guys on offense have we whiffed on in 8 years? Not many, i can tell you that. You can probably count them on one hand.

2012 Preseason

Game 1: 8 catches, 80 yards, 1 TD

Game 2: 6 catches, 29 yards

Game 3: 5 catches, 63 yards, 1 TD

Game 4: 3 catches, 31 yards

Game 5: 8 catches, 44 yards
