My response had nothing to do with the article in the OP. I responded to your assertion that TANF is the only program that qualifies as welfare. It's quite clear that a number of programs fall under the umbrella of "welfare spending."

And my response was to the damn subject of the thread ,but I knew when the "welfare whistle" was blown the dogs would come barking. Barking about something they are clearly ignorant of & then dispute their own proof/links.

You take up Social Security & Medicare with the leeches in your family like your Mother/Grandmother ,etc....who paid into these programs & are now collecting those payments of nearly $2 trillion dollars. Take up the other nearly trillion of budget spending with the Pentagon.

I am am discussing the the thread & link provided & Social Safety net Services/Programs in general. There I corrected the 'safety net' omission in an earlier post.

With a budget of $4 trillion dollars your Safety Net programs(you call welfare) still around 10% or less($400 billion according to you)

Earned Income Tax Credit is roughly 60 billion or more(nearly 20% ) of that "Welfare" you speak of. Reagan with all of his tough talk & attacking 'welfare Queens' actually did more to expand it.

"The earned income Tax Credit is the best anti-poverty,the best pro-family,the best job creation measure to come out of Congress".-Reagan

For all his villainization of the poor & dog whistle 'welfare queen' allusions Reagan added to the programs people like you abhor ,but cut none. He used that dog whistle language(welfare queens) the GOP base loves to hear to get your votes.

Earned Income Tax Credit Recipient's are very hard working poor who aren't at home waiting for the 1st of the month to collect a 'welfare' check, but they are now lumped in with all Safety Net Programs & villainized as 'welfare' leeches.

But to pad the stats of the Welfare leeches Reagan's Earned Income Tax Credit has been lumped in with other programs & it's still a fraction of the total US budget.

You've used the term "welfare queen" three times in this post, alone. That's three more times than Reagan ever used it. He spoke of welfare abusers, for sure, but dim whiners falsely attributed the term "welfare queen" to Reagan. The smear job was the "I can see Russia from my house," of the '80s. Reagan never said it.

I believe you know this, but you are doing your best to promote/prolong the ugly myth.

Why in the hell are you babbling to me about Ronald Reagan? I never mentioned anything about him, and your comments have absolutely nothing to do with my previous discussions with you. I wasn't even alive when Reagan was elected for the first time.

Wow, another straw man argument by sugar71! Oh boy!

I never even insinuated that all TANF or SNAP recipients were all leeches, much less SS/Medicare recipients. Oh, and I'm for cutting military spending btw.

I challenged your assertion that only TANF classifies as "welfare." I also challenged your ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS comment about all social programs being a PITTANCE of federal spending.

Welfare and social programs account for about two-thirds of our federal budget. I usually try not to make sweeping generalizations about people I don't know, but it's possible that you don't think our debt/deficit is a real problem... I do. I think we need to cut everything... Entitlements, military spending, bureaucracy, etc.

I assume you'll bump this thread in a couple of days?

Edit-My apologies, I now see it wasn't you that bumped this thread.
