I like rye for my OF.

Most drinks have about 19 different ways to make then that someone along the way will tell you is the "correct" way and swear by it.

As a bartender I've learned to tell every single one of them they're right and make each drink according to customer. No reason to argue over which recipe is the correct one.

I prefer, 2 sugar cubes soaked in 5 dashes of bitters, splash of water to wet the cubes a little more so they can dissolve. 2 cherries 1 orange slice with peel, all muddled to a mush. Ice and makers on top, stir. Can't beat it IMO.

And as for calling someone out over a drink, c'mon man... For real?

Pissy little bastard.

You should have a drink and calm down. Ease out of your prick suit.

I believe I will try a makers.

This wasn´t the problem. I probably should have been sober.

I lost my train of thought when originally posting. Pathetic was directed at all who replied to you, without giving you the recipe.

Anyway, sorry to have ruffled your feathers. Truly.

If you´re still upset, you can still frick off.

Any miniscule point you might have had is obscured by a cloak of assholery. Best to move on.

Yes...I prefer it in warmer weather and save race in colder weather. I also drink more beer when it's warmer and more scotch in winter.

Well I just made a vodka martini with a breath of vermouth and an anchovy stuffed olive and sat down to read this captivating thread.

So how about we move the argument to vodka or gin in a martini? Squeeze a couple more pages out of this thread.

I prefer gin. But there would be no argument if both weren't acceptible.

Hawkeye Pierce also has his thoughts on martinis:
quote:

“I’m pursuing my lifelong dream of the finest, driest martini that can be found on this or any other world, and I think I hit upon the perfect formula. You take six jiggers of gin, and you drink it while staring at a picture of Lorenzo Schwartz, the inventor of vermouth.”

I recently ordered an old fashioned and they put a ton of simple syrup in it then next time I asked for no simple syrup and they put in soda water! WTF! They also had no rye which is my favorite, they're lucky the food is so good.

I prefer a Blanton's or Woodford Old Fashioned. If you're at a suspect establishment, I'd specify "no soda water," as well.

Usually, it's pretty clear watching the bar-tender make the OF if he knows what he's doing. Makes a huge difference, IMO, whether he uses simple syrup or actually reduces the sugar.

2 oz glass filled with crushed ice.

In a shaker:

1 suger cube
7 shots of Angostura bitters
peeled orange slice
Whisper of warm warm
Muddle above.

Add 1.5oz of Bookers
2 ice cubes
shake vigorously

use orange rind to rim the glass
pour over crushed ice
garnish with cherry and stir straw

being somewhat of a purist:

no such thing as a vodka martini or any other bullshite martini with chocolate, watermelon, toot-fruitee,

Old fashioned are made with Bourbon as martini's are made with Gin..period.

but drink what you want...the above is just my view but won't hold it against you. Life is way to short...

Martinis = gin, obviously. And you must have the proper proportion of vermouth. Those that use only a " breath" of vermouth should just drink straight liquor cause they're not drinking a martini.

But, I'm a live and let live type of person. Enjoy what you like.

Update.

Horrendous bartender consulted book too often. She muddled but then put all contents into a shaker poured all into a glass. To the places credit it was an old fashioned glass. Also they made the best hamburger I have had in a long time. I then stuck to beer. I know what I'm talking about with beer and all she had to do is pull handle.

Next OF I have will be made by me or a bartender in his 50's. Or a hipster bartender. Not a hipster fan but I bet he will know how to make one.

So I'm assuming you have a formula for a breath?

I don't think it's "obvious" that a martini is gin. I can find as much documentation saying vodka is fine as I can for gin.

And for what it's worth I drink good gin martinis as well. Matter of fact I am having brunch at Diguilios and will step over some invisible line and have a nice gin martini this morning. Hell, I might have two, I've got a driver.

And I do agree that flavored aren't true.

I'm assuming that it's less than the traditional ratio, but I suppose I could be wrong.

For those of us that are traditionalist prescriptivists, sure it is.

So why don't you consider flavored as true martinis, since I can find just as much documentation saying they are martinis?

As I mentioned, enjoy what you want. I'm really not trying to be a dick about it. I just find the discussion interesting from an academic perspective.

I personally don't like Makers Mark in my old fashioneds. Wheated bourbons combined withthe simple syrup just make it too sweet.

Try a high rye bourbon if you don't want to use straight rye whiskey. Four Roses, Bulliet, or even Wild Turkey 101 are good choices.

As far as recipes go, all you need for an old fashioned is simple syrup, bitters, and whiskey. Citrus rinds and cherries are completely optional.
