Right. We are thin at that spot and could definitely stand to get younger and cheaper.

When you look at the numbers, guard has the largest cap hit this year, even higher than QB.

Next year it becomes second to QB(when Brees is expected to restructure) and the only spot within $5m is ILB($21m to $16m).

I think it's very important to find a guard and an ILB(or LB in general) for our future cap health. We'd have so many options and would easily be able to keep Jordan, Hicks, and Galette in 2016 if we could shed Grubbs, Lofton, and/or Hawthorne.

Edit:
On the flip side, I see a ton of OTs, but the fact is Strief and Armstead are the starters for at least the next 3 years.

I get maybe taking a flyer late(like 6th round late) to get maybe a legit backup for Armstead and maybe a replacement for Strief 3-4 years down the line, but it should only be if the value is extremely great over other spots.

That's a bad arse draft. But I'm not sure what everyone's obsession with drafting a QB is. Griffin is clearly that developmental guy right now

Me likey, one trade to Houston who came up to get Carr, which doesn't seem unreasonable!

Your Picks:
Round 2 Pick 1 (HOU): Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State (A-)
Round 2 Pick 26: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State (A)
Round 3 Pick 1 (HOU): Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame (A)
Round 3 Pick 27: Joel Bitonio, OT, Nevada (B+)
Round 4 Pick 26: Antone Exum, CB, Virginia Tech (B+)
Round 5 Pick 27: Gabe Ikard, C, Oklahoma (D)
Round 5 Pick 29: Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice (A)
Round 6 Pick 26: Dri Archer, WR, Kent State (A-)

Add some speed to this team!

spot on in looking forward. Something will have to give among Evans/Grubbs & Hawthorne/Lofton.

2015
Grubbs/Evans $20.6mil cap hit, $11mil dead money
Hawthorne/Lofton $15mil cap hit, $8mil dead money

2016
Grubbs/Evans $20.5mil cap hit, $4.5mil dead money
Hawthorne/Lofton $13mil cap hit, $4.5mil dead money

Hopefully a 2015 Brees restructure might get the team through to 2016. The net cap savings goes from 2015 $17mil to $24mil in total for those 4 guys.

Yeah it isn't a definite need to get a replacement now as we should be okay through 2015. But we definitely need to start trying to find replacements ASAP. We have 3 drafts/2 FA periods to do it(would prefer the draft method).

It isn't just Brees, it's Byrd, Graham, and then paying 3 of our Dlinemen in 2016. Those are all going to be considerable. Then in 2017 a good chunk of the core will be up(only Lewis, Lorig, Strief, Morstead, and Byrd are currently contracted that year, with a 5th year option on Vaccaro).

It's some cap hell but I'd rather that than having excess cap and no talent as Brees ages. With him turning 36 in 2015 it's time more than ever to be ALL IN. After the magician job Loomis did to get Byrd this year I ain't worried.

Yes definitely agreed. I'd much rather field a playoff team near every year and have a chance while having to let the occasional good player or two go then be Cleveland.

There are ways around the cap The Loomis works the best he can.

My other agenda for wanting a guard and LB is more than just getting cheaper though. I think we could upgrade over Grubbs and Hawthorne especially, and Lofton also if we hit on two LBs. All 3 are a bit one dimensional(Grubbs is far from a mauler and Hawthorne and Lofton can't cover a sleeping baby with a grandma quilt).

Edit:
Meant to put that Loomis, but The Loomis is just so .
