Took Johneny Kerman to Gilly (Eve's moon) and back last night.

Here are some pics.

Burning to try and get an encounter with the moon (Took a long arse time to get the orbit just right so I could match up and get an encounter)

Approach to Gilly

Johneny getting some high Gilly orbit science!

Got in pretty low orbit in preparation for a landing

Johneny went on EVA and decided to gather some science from low Gilly orbit

Decoupling the nuclear engine stage (still had a good amount of fuel on that thing)

Took a ton of maneuvering but Johneny finally found a stable landing area. The gravity on Gilly is so low that it's hard to get a stable landing. Every time you touch down the lander wants to bounce back up. I touched down probably 4-5 times before we came to a complete stop.

Johneny Kerman. First kerbal to set foot on Gilly

He was pretty excited.

Saw an object off in the distance and decided to investigate

Turns out it was me decoupled nuclear engine stage. It landed safely and didn't break up on the surface because of the low gravity.
Left the debris there as a monument.

Back to the landing site. Placed the flag, did some science and got back in the ship to head home.

Leaving Gilly and Eve.

After 2 years floating around in outer space waiting for a Kerbin encounter, Johneny finally had his encounter and burned towards home. First time he had seen the planet Kerbin in over 6 years.

Gone through the atmosphere, decoupled and parachutes deployed.

Johneny Kerman landed safely in the ocean and became the first kerbal to successfully land, walk on Gilly and return to Kerbin safely.

The entire trip gained me over 1000 science.

Nice, looks like he had a good time. Do any asteroid missions yet?

Not yet. That's actually my next mission I plan on doing though. I've tested a few of the new rockets that were added and it's going to be really easy getting things into orbit now.

Will post updates

I have no earthly idea (see what I did there?) what this is about, but it looked fun.

Robbaz is one of my favorite KSP youtubers.

Him, kurtjmac and Scott Manley are fun to watch.

In a good way or a bad way? I would hate to see them easy mode getting into orbit too much.

Fixed, that guy is funny no matter what game he plays. I dislike Sims and I could watch him play the Sims for hours. I find his videos a lot more enjoyable than Manley's, but Manley's always have much more depth and knowledge to them to learn from.

I guess it depends. I've had the hardest time getting a design that could transport rovers to Eve and other celestial bodies because i waste so much fuel trying to get out of Kerbin's atmosphere. With the new tanks and engines, it shouldn't take me too long to get a design that will work.

It will be MUCH easier for newcomers to the game to get into orbit now (that's if they're playing sandbox mode). Career mode won't suffer too much though because it takes a while to get the new parts.

Oh the episode where he has 7 or 8 sims eating until they are obese is hilarious. That and his Redneck Brothers series.

Yeah he's more of a "watch and learn" for me. I look at his designs if I'm having trouble building something and try to model after what he does. I watch some of his Interstellar Quests videos and every great once in a while he will screw up. It's a pretty good series.

ETA: One of my all time favorite YouTube videos and Robbaz moments. I laughed for about ten minutes straight after watching this.

Gotcha. He must not visit the help board too often.

Great job taking all the screenshots. You have me keep going back to try to get further in KSP but i get really down about not knowing how to effectively earn science points.

Thanks man.
I used to have the same problem. Would get down and not play for a while but eventually it will come to you and once you are able to get to the moon, everything just snowballs and a ton of things open up to you.

Scott Manley just put out a new tutorial series. He explains things really well.

Keep trying man. Don't give up.

Thank you for your great posts. I played a lot in sandbox mode a few months ago and then put the game down for a while. Your screenshots encouraged me to pick the game back up and try out career mode. I love the game once again.

I had my first Mun landing in career mode and really like the part progression. I will post screenshots later. Once I learn the intricacies of maximizing science I will be on asteroids in no time.

I go back and watch some of robbaz old videos and just laugh.

he loves him some rednecks

His BF3 videos were great also. Guy could rape at the game. And he absolutely hated snipers. His sniper shotgun was a classic. His videos when he would smoke bomb them, go around and rape were a riot also. " Don't mind me, i'm a swedish tourist"

Thanks buddy. Glad I could help you get back into it. I can't wait to see some of your screenshots

I'm trying to build a rocket right now that would get me to Ike (Duna's moon) and one that could get me to the Jool system (haven't been able to get there in career mode yet). I'll post updates as well.

Here are some screenshots of my most recent Mun mission.

I am very pleased with my current rocket design. Due to a small bug in rocket building, I was able to take a Tri-Coupler and attach a set of rockets with another Tri-Coupler to it. This has made my first stage have 9 rocket motors, but only 7 are visible and several occupy the same space. (I hope that description makes sense.) My first and second stages put me nicely in orbit, and my third stage can get me to the Mun, with some extra fuel to help slow the landing/return stage before being ejected. My final stage allows for landing, taking off and flying to a different area on the Mun, and then flying back home with fuel to spare.

I will have to modify this design to go past Minimus, however getting to Minimus should not be a problem.

Just before launch.

After the solid rocket boosters have been ejected.

Second stage. Wupsie, accidentally deployed the landing gear.

Ejecting the second stage and burning prograde towards the Mun.

Here is a shot of my final two stages.

Here is a shot from the other side.

After so much time spent in sandbox mode getting close to the Mun is no longer a challenge. Hopefully that precision will help when I head for Minimus and beyond.

The Mun is looming in the background. Time to flip around and prepare to pick a place to land.

I love the textures that they use in this game. The planets and moons are each unique and fun to explore. There are probably more stars in the background than there should be, but the effect is enchanting.

Now that I am on the light side of the Mun I am ready to descend.

Gear deployed. Horizontal motion 0.0 m/s. Final approach has begun.

Touchdown. Unfortunately I have already been to the highlands. Fortunately this mission was for the purpose of this post, so the 50 science that I got was enough.

Jebediah is my favorite. I suspect that he is most people's favorite. He is always both terrified and idiotically content. This is his fifth trip to the Mun in career mode.

Ascent has begun. This trip to the Mun was a short one. Once I build my Rover much more exploring will be done.

Once again the textures in this game amaze me. Kerbin looks great from this distance. I decide to burn off the rest of my fuel before ejecting this stage.

Good bye landing stage, hello final descent. Jebediah will be home in no time.

Here is an example of the dichotomy of the ice caps in the background and red hot temperatures caused by friction.

I like that they even created animations for the drag and air turbulence. Truly great attention to detail.

Chute deployed.

Almost home. Another successful mission to the Mun. Time to set my sights higher.

For some reason my Science bay blows up every time I hit solid land. I probably need to change up my parachutes.

Jeb looks happy to be home.

I have had a great time picking this game back up. Career mode has fun parts progression. Sandbox mode allowed me to go wherever I wanted, but it wasn't as rewarding as making a design that has limited parts and then modifying it until you can achieve the goals that you set out to accomplish. The next step for me will be a rover, and then I will have to begin missions to Minimus. I haven't built a space station yet in this mode either. Having a fuel depot will be pivotal when trying to travel to distant planets.

Bravo sir. Bravo

Love the rocket and lander designs.

I have always had a very hard time getting fuel depots in orbit and docking. Finding a good design is hell for me.

Please post any new missions. I love seeing other Kerbonauts.

I have a few fuel depot designs from sandbox mode that I can post. The trick is docking 4-6 pieces of the fuel depot together in space. I spent about a week building a space station/fuel depot several months ago. The rocket required probably 50 struts to keep from falling apart on launch because the docking bays for the depot were so weak.

Holy shite. I just downloaded the demo and I can't imagine how long it takes to get good at this game. fricking complicated.

I still can't catch a planets pull. Only land on Mun and Minimus. :(

Docking is seemingly impossible.

Once I master that....
