2013 Snap Counts

A look at the New Orleans Saints' total snap counts on offense from the 2013 regular season (out of 1,127 possible snaps):
Quarterback:
Drew Brees 1,111 (98.6%)
Luke McCown 16 (1.4%)
Tight end:
Jimmy Graham 754 (66.9%)
Benjamin Watson 497 (44.1%)
Josh Hill 176 (15.6%)
Wide receiver:
Marques Colston 750 (66.6%)
Kenny Stills 690 (61.2%)
Lance Moore 441 (39.1%)
Robert Meachem 389 (34.5%)
Nick Toon 196 (17.4%)
Running back:
Pierre Thomas 564 (50%)
Darren Sproles 357 (31.7%)
Mark Ingram 169 (15%)
Khiry Robinson 73 (6.5%)
Travaris Cadet 11 (1%)
Fullback:
Jed Collins 442 (39.2%)
Offensive tackle:
Zach Strief 1,036 (91.9%)

THOUGHTS:
•Only two ironmen on the list: de la Puente and Grubbs (though Brees gets an honorary ironman nod for only missing 16 inconsequential snaps). And based on my weekly film studies, de la Puente and Grubbs have something else in common -- they both improved greatly during the second half of the season. I’m very curious to see what happens with de la Puente in free agency. Although he struggled during the first half of this season, he finished strong. He was also very good in both 2011 and 2012. And his durability has been an underrated asset.
•Moore is another big question mark heading into the offseason, since his role diminished in the offense this year and he’s due $3.8 million in salary and bonuses. Moore missed three games with a hand injury, but he still played less than 50 percent of the team’s snaps when he was active. He did seem to get more involved in the offense down the stretch, so it’s possible the Saints will keep him at his current salary or try to work out an agreement on a reduced salary.
•Not bad for a rookie: Stills played more snaps than any skill position player outside of Graham and Colston. The team showed trust in him during the preseason opener -- and it never wavered all season long. ... Meanwhile, fellow rookies Armstead and Robinson came on strong late. Armstead actually played more snaps in the playoffs (148) than in the regular season. And Robinson played 31 snaps in the playoffs -- nearly half of his regular-season total.

This will be hard for any rookie WR to ever break under CSP I think.

Even with the late season work load I thought this would be higher..

If betting right now I think Strief and Jenkins are back. dlP might be but I hope they get a center in the draft even if so.

Moore is definitely worth noting for the receivers. Sure he was out 3 games, but the snap count is definitely low compared to seasons past even in games he participated.
With Morgan coming back and us potentially grabbing a new WR/playmaker - it could be Colston, Stills, Morgan, and [insert new WR here] as your big 4.
For Moore's production, 5mil is hefty, but if we can lower his contract down to what we'd lose in cap (i believe 2.35mil) it wouldn't be a bad option. Who knows what this FO might do, we might not even draft a WR for all we know.
For the RBs: Ingram + robinson need more time this offseason to practice catching out of the backfield. Ingram caught 32 balls in his heisman campaign year. TRich caught similar numbers to Ingram in college yet he caught 51 balls in cleveland's system last year.
I honestly don't see why they can't be viable options in the future in regards to filling the PT role either - maybe not full time this upcoming year, but definitely a lot more than this past year.
The sproles role is a bit difference since he lines up everywhere and he's more 'shifty' than any other RB we have. A prospect, DeAnthony Thomas in later rounds might change this in a year+ as well. I wouldn't mind going into '15 season with Ingram, DeAnthony Thomas, and robinson as our 3 rotation. Re-do the old days of PT, bush, and bell.

Yes, you have to take into account that some of the missed snaps are due to injury, but you really get a feel for how durable guys like Grubbs and DLP are. I know most injuries are due to misfortune, but they knocked heads with someone 1127 times last year and didn't come out one time. I think that speaks volumes of their consistency.
I'd still like to see someone come in and give DLP a run for the start, but in all honesty, I think he'll be our center next year.
Stills is extremely impressive to me as well. Featured in over 60% of the snaps this season, that's huge for a rookie and it really displays his work ethic. I think we have a solid receiver in this kid.

I would expect it to be resolved and perfectly clear when the draft rolls around particularly for Center & Right Tackle. I guess the re-sign Strief. dlP I really dunno. If you can upgrade, get younger, and cheaper with a 2nd or 3rd Rd (maybe even 4th) draft pick then it seems pretty logical. If dlP hasn't been inked by the end of March or so then I'll be expecting someone new.

I wouldn't say that. He could be sitting on a number that's too high for us(and other teams), which could come down after the draft if some interested teams feel confident in the rookie picks. Or some team might really like him and miss on center in the draft and pay the price.

Don't see scenario one being too likely. After as fringe as dlP has been in his career, I think he takes the first multi year deal that comes his way. I really hope it is very team friendly if he does return. I'm hoping for the draft cuz I see 4-5 guys that I would count as an immediate upgrade, younger, & cheaper. Perfect world is a guy that would slide over to guard in a couple of yrs.

Surprises to me:
Watson - Didn't realize he played that many snaps. He was definitely underused in the passing game this year.
Stills - second most snaps at WR for a rookie on this team is amazing. I'm excited to watch him get better.
Armstead - once again I am amazed at how much he improved with so few snaps. He'll go into next season as the unquestioned starter and may end next season as a top-10 tackle in the league. Crazy.
Bad surprises:
Graham - hard to believe our best weapon was only on the field 2/3 of the time. He's absolutely got to improve as a blocker and physicality in general.
Ingram - 15% of the snaps? That's just not fair. He earned more snaps for next year based on his late season/post season play.
