Should we?

Hell yea!!!...Makes the need at WR diminish a bit...We could still draft one in like the 3rd Round...Like Moncrief or Huff assuming we pick up Nicks.

Shields sticks with the Packers for 4/$39m. After that, probably looking at something like 4/$32m for a guy like Munnerlyn.

re: Saints 2014 Offseason Thread

Is that a guess on Shields or did he get that? Because they said they weren't going higher than $5.5m on him before.

And I highly doubt Munnerlyn gets what Grimes got. Grimes was a legit number 1 guy and Munnerlyn is a number 2 guy.

Edit:
If those are guesses Thrillho, I think you need to go look at what guys have actually gotten this year. It's a buyer's market and the top guys aren't getting near what Revis got. I mean Grimes only got half of what he got.

It was a discount, but I believe it was said that he could have gotten $7m elsewhere last year because he was only a one year starter and a number 2 with the Steelers.

So while we got him cheaper, it was only by a couple of mil per, though over the life of the contract it was a lot(about $8-9m total).

And it's not drastically backloaded or anything.

re: Saints 2014 Offseason Thread

Yeah I finally saw something on it. That's quite shocking considering they said before they weren't going to budge from the $5.5-6m range.

I guess now that he can get other offers and they saw what other teams were willing to give that had to overpay just to keep him.

Stupid move on their part because he was willing to settle for $7m per before. They just lost big time.

And I figured he would get about $7-8m per because he is young, though not as good as Grimes(but he's older).

I still don't think Munnerlyn and those similar guys get as much as Grimes, but all it takes is one team.

Edit:
The deal is actually front loaded because the Packers have a ton of cap space this year($30m+ before they signed Shields). Smart move on their part.

$15m in year one, and $9m in the third and fourth years. So the second year is for $6m. So front loaded year one and back loaded year two.

That's what I was thinking. A team with tons of cap space (Cleveland, Oakland) striking out on some guys and pretty much being forced to overpay a player like Captain. I may be overestimating his value a bit, Evan Silva of rotoworld actually thinks Peanut Tillman is a better FA CB than Munnerlyn (he did make the Pro Bowl, but he's on his last legs and has been primarily a zone CB).

PFT did a poor job explaining it. When they said

quote:

his 2014 compensation is $15 million

is including most of, if not the entire signing bonus.

quote:

Jason_OTC ?@Jason_OTC 13m
Based on @AlbertBreer tweet looks like a 5.625m cap in year 1, 9.125m cap in year 2, and 11.125m in year 3. #packers

Still, $26m in the first 3 seasons isn't far off from the average per season.

And that's also something to look at. Some teams may just be looking for that 1-2 year stop gap while others are looking for a more permanent solution.

All I can say is I'd be shocked if he stays in Carolina because he won't be cheap. He'd have to take a hell of a hometown discount.

I still think we get a corner, but I just hope we don't have to settle for an older, cheaper guy and still be "forced" to draft one or go back to hoping White and/or Robinson develop.

How good is Captain? I've never really paid attention to him outside of the novelty that is his name. I was under the impression the Panthers secondary was pretty shoddy.

Yeah I see now they meant actual money and not cap money.

If you have the cap money then front load on a young guy, but back loading always works out well for the team unless said player gets a ridiculous signing bonus. It leaves the option open to pay less than they would have otherwise.

But then at the same time front loading could bite you in the arse if the player gets seriously hurt in the first or second year when you could have been paying them a lot less.

He's a pretty good number 2. Just don't stick him on 6'4" guys and he does fine.

I'd say he played about as well as Greer did last year sticking the 2s.

That's why it's hard for me to see him getting #1 CB money. He'll have a hard time being a teams top corner.

Yeah, I'm probably overestimating his value, especially given that both FA and the draft are very deep with CBs, though Gilbert and Dennard are the only two CBs that I'd be comfortable throwing to the wolves as a rookie. Still, it has tons of 2nd/3rd round guys that you would be OK starting off as a #3/4 CB and moving up in year 2.

It's tough to gauge how good Captain is, though. Walt Cherepinsky does his homework and has him as his #3 FA CB. PFF has him as the 4th highest rated (though he did play nickel fairly often, which makes things easier for him). Others seem to think he's just an OK #2. His elite front 7 also made things easier for him.

Nicks, colston, Stills, graham would be pretty solid. Combine that with an emphasis on power running and that's one hell of an offense.

Yeah it definitely depends on who you ask, but actually getting to see him play at least twice a year I'd be damn happy with him as our 2.

Now if we needed a 1 I don't think I'd jump on Mnnerlyn. There are other guys who maybe aren't as good but are better suited for sticking a team's top receiver.

And I guess that it will be up to how teams out there view him. If someone sees him as a 1 he could easily get $8-10m per. If nobody sees him as a 1 then he likely gets no more than $5m per.

And that's what I was basing my predictions on(him being a two).

I'm just excited to see who we might target and who we'll actually get.

i wouldn't be shocked if he lands in Tampa Bay to play for his old coach. He may be getting old but he's always had that knack for forcing fumbles.
