re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

Just got an email from Marriott today. 70k gets you 3 days at a pretty nice resort on Maui with 10k points still in the bank.

FYI, Chicken is putting a sidebar ad for the Marriott 70k points card when I visit the site.

He also seems to think I want to buy another Audi because he's putting that up as well. Damned Chicken seems to know everything about me.

re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

I've been switching all of my utilities and monthly bills over to my credit card and I have a question for you credit card wizards.

My mortgage company will not take a credit card payment (or atleast I can not setup auto draft with a credit card) it has to be withdrawn from a banking account. Any way to some how still pay this with a CC? Some sort of account loophole or something?

They way people generally pay mortgages is through gift cards. For instance, you use your credit card to buy one vanillas, visa gift cards, etc. at local drug stores, grocery stores, and gas stations. You get credit rewards for the gift card purchase. You then can load some of the gift cards to bluebird/serve or others and directly pay the mortgage. You can also use the gift cards to pay the mortgage through evolve.

Do a serious amount of research on the gift card thing. It's not as easy of a process as it was just several months ago.

Teddy can go into detail on the process.

VA, what's a good card for someone that charges $3-$4K per month?

I use a Citibank Driver's Edge now, but redeeming the reward is a PITA.

What is the breakdown on types of charges? Gas, grocery store etc?

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Are you more interested in cash back, airline rewards, hotel rewards, etc?

30+k annually of gas/grocery spend would be a good candidate for AMEX PRG. LINK

If you fly delta you could also hit the annual spend bonuses with the delta amexes.

That is exactly what I was going to suggest.

He's been hitting me pretty hard with Tripadvisor hotel deals and the Audi. As long as he keeps those damn audio ads out of here, I'm good.

Cash, I guess. I usually charge enough on the business card for hotel rewards.

For cash, you're better off with the Amex blue cash preferred card

Amex just credits your statement whenever you want

Points are generally worth more than cash if redeemed for the right types of travel, but that's a game that I'm not too versed on

Using points to get cash or merchandise is usually the biggest rip off

This. I gave up on it when VRs when down the shitter.

Now with a few clicks of a button I get an easy 2K in MS just via AP and Serve.

Unless you want to make it a hobby I guess, like extreme couponing, but I just can't get into driving around to places, getting denied by a cashier, going to another place, trying to load it at Wal Mart, etc, etc.

Actually this is what you want if you want cash back. Old Amex Blue
quote:

Up to 5% Cash Back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations & select U.S. drugstores (Everyday Purchases). Up to 1% Cash Back on other purchases. For your first $6,500¹ spend in a reward year², you will earn 1% on Everyday Purchases³ (5% after 65004), and 0.5% on other purchases (then 1%).

0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months.

Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional terms and restrictions apply. (Presume these T&Cs are standard and that all credit cards state this)

The Amex blue preferred caps at $6,500 annual spend. That won't do you any good.
