Right - Gus went to Ark State to solidify credentials. No major program was hiring him before then.
Is Morris willing to do Ark State-like duty?

Also Gus chose Ark State because they had a stacked roster and played in a manageable conference so he didn't have to rebuild. He had turned down other non BCS offers.

I really think SMU should have gone ahead and fired June Jones and thrown a ton of money at Morris.

They are the perfect school for him to cut his teeth at as a HC before he moves to a better job.

It's not like money would have been an issue with them either as they are paying June $2 million a year which is higher than several BCS schools.

Instead they extended a lame duck coach an extra two years who has clearly been half assing it since he tried to run off to ASU.

If/When Bielema doesn't work out here, I wouldn't mind having him.

Turned down a good sized offer from Vandy. Vandy is a good program, but it makes sense to turn down the challenging school in the big conference for a smaller school where winning is likely. Easier to set up for the gig you really want. If you fail at a mid tier major conference school, you've got your work cut out to get back.

Would love to see him end up at Vandy. Jonathan McCrary would be a great fit in his system.

i think morris would be a great fit at vandy... to be honest, they need more explosiveness offensively. For as good of a motivator/recruiter Franklin is, his offenses for a former OC kinda sucked.

y'all really do have a special ability to set yourselves up for disappointment and guarantee the fanbase sees whoever you end up hiring as meh. My favorite part is when you act all plugged in when you come on here and repeat OB bs

What's the story here?

I'm not sure if Vandy is a great fit tbh but I do think he'd be successful over the long haul. I'm just not sure how his system would go over against better athletes at basically every position. Vandy has decent talent, but not explosive talent. It would take a slow and steady build until he gets a Sammy Watkins type.

Didn't he decline to take the NC State job last year? If that is to be believed then maybe he is just waiting.

I don't know if he will make 1.7MM anywhere unless it's at a top 30 type job

coaching salaries have exploded though. I'd guess half or more of all P5 coaches will be making more than $2m this year. NCSU or Wake may not pay that, but Vandy was paying Franklin over $2m.

I think for a gig he thought he would succeed at fairly quickly, he'd probably transition for close to lateral pay anyway. This is going to sound silly to many, but look out for SMU if that job opens.

Vanderbilt would be a good stepping stone job for Morris.

That would be a huge risk for A&M.

I doubt they would go that route.

Yeah, well we're all plugged into something. We'll see how this develops. Only Aggie that we're interested in. And btw, I am not an OB subscriber, but guess what, the internet is kinda of a cool place to pickup information.

Morris has been awful smart about his coaching future IMO. It also helps (aleast from Clemson's standpoint) that he has an insane buyout if he takes a lateral position (ie an OC job at another school).

He's just waiting for the right job instead of jumping at the first thing available (yes I'm talking to you Dan Mullen. He would have taken Texas Tech last year if offered IMO.

I think he knows better than to take Vandy, but we'll see. The guy will slaughter any job interview IMO, though. Listening to him speak is like crack for a football junkie.
