If I were Charlie Strong, I would kick McCombs out of any meeting or practice he tried to attend.

And I'd probably get fired.

Patterson better be darn sure he has Powers' backing then. Because up until the afternoon he finally relented and push Mack out, Powers definitely sided with McCombs and Joe Jamail on how the football program should be run.

Powers runs a university, not an athletic department. UTx's school of business is named the McCombs School. You can always hire another AD. That's simply about money. You can't readily replace donors of McCombs' magnitude.

I think they are basically using Patterson as a fall guy here. Everyone wants Red and Jamail out of the day-to-day shite but Powers can't push them back without major repercussions. Patterson will have to do so until the day something goes wrong and then he'll be ousted to placate them.

If McCombs thought he would get Gruden to coach at UT then I have a couple of bridges to sell him in NYC.

John Gruden hasn't coached in years and has never been a college coach. What the frick makes "Red" think Gruden would dominate?

I'm wondering the same thing. The Gruden hype is bizarre and it's funny how many people fall for his "interest".

Didn't Gruden say on the OB Bowl telecast he'd like to be the LSU RB coach to work with the talent at the position?

Given Strong's feelings about getting shafted due to color years ago, I'd bet he's pissed off as hell.

In an interview with ESPN 1250 in San Antonio, billionaire booster Red McCombs criticized the Longhorns' process and suggested that Strong is not on par with the type of candidate that Texas should be hiring to lead its football program.

"I think the whole thing is a bit sideways," McCombs said via ESPN.com. "I don't have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.

"But I don't believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don't think it adds up."

Maybe a coordinator?

Maybe?

Mother.

Of.

God.

I don't know if it's out and out racist or not but it's pretty ludicrous and ignorant to state that Charlie Strong *might* be qualified to be a coordinator at Texas.

Strong was an actual coordinator and assistant head coach at a program that won two national titles during his tenure at said program.

But he *might* be qualified to be a coordinator at Texas.

The only thing missing from that radio interview was a long pause followed by the use of the word "that boi-yuh there".

One thing is for sure. Texas certainly has a high opinion of themselves.

I think he had at least one black coach while he owned the Vikings. He can not like the Strong hire and not be a racist. He is mad that he was not involved in the process.

Right. He bought the Vikings in 98 where Dennis Green had been head coach for 6 years. Here was Green's record while Red was the owner:

MIN 1998 15 1 0 .938 1st in NFC Central 1 1 .500 Lost to Atlanta Falcons in NFC Championship Game.
MIN 1999 10 6 0 .625 2nd in NFC Central 1 1 .500 Lost to St. Louis Rams in NFC Divisional Game.
MIN 2000 11 5 0 .688 1st in NFC Central 1 1 .500 Lost to New York Giants in NFC Championship Game.
MIN 2001* 5 10 0 .333 4th in NFC Central – – – –
So one losing season after three of the most successful years in the NFC and he fires him.

The man loves black folk!

Uh how about the fact he feels a successful head coach and previously successful defensive coordinator would "make a fine position coach or maybe coordinator".

If you can't see why he's being dismissive of a very proven coach then you are either ignorant or think just like him.

Every time I read something like this I just laugh and laugh. So because he drafted black players (he has to) and hired a black coach (he has to at some point) he is not racist?

Since when do racist not hire blacks anyways? Racists are good with blacks working the labor areas, what they aren't good with is blacks managing or in highest positions of authority.

He obviously has a problem with a very qualified black man managing/in the highest authority position. To the point he insults the man by saying he is more qualified to be a position coach, when the man has been a successful coordinator on two championship teams.
