Great costumes and makeup also. It was a treat to see the Tellarites and Andorians.

I remember liking this one as a kid because we get to see a whole bunch of new aliens.
This really helped build on the concept that the Federation was not monolithic and was, in fact, a thriving, expanding - almost a "Wild West" feel at the frontiers, with the stodgy government-types trying to get a handle on the situation. Sometimes, it is difficult to separate Starfleet from "The Federation" - and this type of episode explored some of those distinctions (and more so than some of the cliche bureaucratic interference episodes - this one seemed very serious, from a diplomatic, political and, ultimately, a tactical situation.)

*A PRIVATE LITTLE WAR*
Kirk and crew get involved in a little proxy war with the Klingons. Kirk gets reacquainted with an old friend after a near-death injury.

Nona
Interesting that Kirk and McCoy are on the landing party without Spock. We rarely see that. I missed him, but liked the slapping scene in sickbay.
I also liked Dr M'benga.
I thought the mugato was well done, but could have done without the native wigs.
I would have liked to see more of the Klingons, but I guess the point of the episode was the proxy war of the natives.

I lost track of this thread for a while. But this was always one of my favorites. Clear Cold War (Nam/Cuba) type over tones, but a powerful episode.

There were a handful like this where the landing party went down leaving Spock in command. However, they were fairly comfortable taking the Big 3 down, leaving +1 (Scotty) in charge - and many of Scotty's best moments were when he was in command.
In this case, it was probably just rotational - Nimoy and bridge crew getting a little time off while Shatner and Kelley took the load with the guest stars - probably did everybody else's scenes in 2 days.
And I agree:

Really well put together lady (should we go NSFW for this thread?)

Saturday bump - last call for A Private Little War (next up will be The Gamesters of Triskelion).

I didn't dig this episode. No other comments.
You've been taking too long with the episodes. I'm beginning to forget my rewatch of the series a few months back.

*THE GAMESTERS OF TRISKELION*
Kirk, Uhura and Chekov are intercepted by a powerful race obsessed with gambling on gladatorial-style combat - to that end, they have created herds of alien humanoids from across the galaxy - the Enterprise crewmembers are to join these herds and fight in the games.

As a youngster, this episode made me feel funny.

Angelique Pettyjohn went on to B-movie fame, had a bad drug/alcohol problem, but recovered a little (thanks to the Star Trek circuit) before dying fairly young at 48. She was only 24 appearing in this episode as Shahna.
Ruskin - who played the Thrallmaster Galt, appeared on screen in every Trek series except TNG - this gives him a unique distinction as even Majel Barrett did not appear on screen in Voyager or Enterprise, but only as the computer voice. He was one of only 5 actors to appear in TOS and Enterprise.

This was a fun episode, full of fights and babes, yet still had a satisfyingly noble ending.
Captain Kirk challenging the Providers to the final wager was another great moment for him during the series.
There were also some good scenes on the bridge with Spock, McCoy, and Scotty. Particularly when Spock asks in a conspiratorial whisper if McCoy and Scotty wish to declare a mutiny.

One of my favorite scenes in all of Star Trek - and a big reason that (real) Spock is my favorite fictional character, period.

*OBSESSION*
Kirk faces an old foe - an old foe that reignites a sense of failure from his past and a drive for revenge.
One of the best straight dramatic episodes, and probably the first Trek motif of the Captain developing Ahab-like tendencies in pursuit of a metaphorical Moby Dick.
Stephen Brooks guest starred as Garrovick, who is supposed to represent the way Kirk was as a young officer.
Although Eddie Laskey's character Leslie died on screen - an unshot scene where a miracle potion revived him is the best explanation as to why he reappears - as Leslie, in subsequent episodes.
In addition to his legend as the ubiquitous "redshirt" - Paskey also did photo double work for Shatner and was Jimmy Doohan's hand double when required.
