Whats expected to happen in the 3rd installment?

Gandalf gets freed somehow, Smaug gets slain, the battle of Elves/Dwarves/Orcs at the end along with flashing between Gandalf and co. Battling Sauron I guess?

Just seems like not much meat to stretch into 3 hours.

And it shouldn't have been 3 movies but Jackson has gone so far from the book that he can do it.

What you mentioned is all that's left in the book but Jackson's elf/dwarf love story + Legolas' pursuit of the other pale orc will also be included.

Tolkien also had a brief telling of Bilbo's return journey and Balin visiting him a good bit later after the adventure so we'll see if that's in there.

Makes the story more complete and interesting IMO.

More complete? Making stuff up doesn't add to a complete story.

With that said he does add stuff that are in other Tolkien's works which I don't mind. And I actually don't mind the Legolas storyline, it was cool to see Legolas' reaction to being bloodied up. And Legolas was overall more of a hardass was cool. But I can do without the love story.

Nope I had the misfortune of going through the Tolkien / Jackson lore like this

Read Hobbit
Saw LOTR movies
Read LOTR series
Saw Hobbit movie

So I kind of ruined it for myself seeing the LOTR movies before reading the books so I didn't have any opinions on how he deviated from the book. Besides the love story was what? Eowyn loves Aragorn but he loves Arwen? At least there was a history between Aragorn and Arwen, not an arbitrary hey we spotted each other in the woods, now I'm going to pursue his company because I care so much.

Besides even in the LOTR trilogy that love story was a fleeting part of the movies. And even if I didn't care so much about the Hobbit book the whole relationship between these particular dwarves and these particular elves is how much they loathe each other. If they were going to do a forbidden love story I would have preferred them to focus on Legolas not being able to be with Freckles, not Freckles not being able to be with a dwarf.

Just my opinion of course.

Like many people have said before, peter jackson stretched this thing out waaaay too long..it would have been nearly perfect had he shaved off useless takes near the end of the movie during the lake city and smaug scenes...seriously how long does the dragon scenes have to be for people to understand that he is a bad arse mofo!....With all that being said, legolas was a beast and i enjoyed the movie very much in 3d!!!

What amazes me is how much of a killer the elves are! Legolas flat out embarrasses that orge on steroids! It was actually quite comical how he manhandled every opponent he faced! lol... 30 of them actually had to fall back to just him alone!! haha

That's pretty much how the elves and hell any of the heroes were in Tolkien's books. They were some bad mofos.

Just saw it tonite, good flick, some over done...one question

Is anyone having trouble with the Thorin character?

I mean he's supposed to be a great king but he leaves after 30 seconds of trying to open the gate WTF?

I didn't like the scene in which he confronts Bilbo for the arkenstone...it's like one minute he's in, one minute he's out...awwww frick it attitude and all of this after he welcomed Bilbo into the clan after he saved his arse at the end of an unexpected journey....

Seems like his character is not being very consistent

They are trying to portray the effect the Arkenstone is already having on Thorin's mind. He's kind of a little obsessed with it and this is messing with his reasoning like crack with an addict.

Can someone explain the strategic aspect of having dwarves in Erebor?

I seem to remember something to the effect (and the movies are alluding to it by the way Gandalf is pushing for their reinstatement) that it dramatically changed the strategic landscape of the war of the Ring even though the dwarves armies didn't participate in it.

I think the important thing was to kill Smaug before Sauron got his full power back.

I was very disappointed. I didn't like the cliffhanger. It just didn't feel the same as any other film in the series. It dragged greatly and so much could have been cut. The hobbit could easily have been fit into two flicks. Way, way too much filler. Smaug was great, though. And I am a huge LOTR fan. This one was the weakest of all five. By far. Hoping the final is better. I don't see how it can't be.

Watched it today and this was my take as well. I sorta expected it though. Figured it would be an "Empire Strikes Back" type of movie in so far as a transition that was meant to be doom and gloom before the redemption in the 3rd one.

Also, I thought it was by far the worst of the 5 so far. I liked the Hobbit. This one seemed stretched. There just is not enough material in the Hobbit for 3 long movies. I feel the attack on Lake town and Battle of Five Armies are going to be extremely drawn out in the third one. That is about the only material left to cover. The battle has a lot of ups and downs and is like a roller-coaster in the book, but it is only a chapter or two and I feel they are gonna have to do some extremely long drawn out battle scenes that will get old to fill enough time.

I figure the 3rd hobbit will be better than this past one but the second weakest of the 6 movies. Desolation was well made, there just isn't enough material IMO. Overall I enjoyed it enough and won't nitpick it, I just think three movies is overkill.

The main purpose was to kill Smaug before he could side with Sauron and to establish a strong dwarven kingdom in the north. Both of which were achieved. The dwarves did some serious fighting during LOTR, they are mentioned several times in books, Along with the men of Dale and the defendants of Beorn.

I could not disagree more, i read the book and I believe they are doing a great job with the details and the adaptations to bring the story to life. I enjoyed it very much.

People complained when they didn't use enough time in the previous trilogy to put in every little detail from the books. Now Jackson is using the same amount of screen time on a single book and they complain that it's too drawn out.

I also find it funny listening to those complaining about made up stuff being added to a made up story.

I agree the movies are very well done and read the books as a kid as well.

I just think the hobbit is not as good as the LOTR. Two reasons. One is the material is not as good. Two is the pacing. I think the Hobbit would be great as two movies. As three, they are still enjoyable, just not great.

good point, but it is not for lack of trying, the fight scene with the dwarfs in the rapids was worth the price of admission.

Actually, that is how they met.
Aragorn spotted Arwen in the woods of Lothlorien.
Sort of mirroring Beren and Luthien's first encounter.
And both were their ancestors.
Which come to think of it, they're basically kissing cousins.
Alabama fans, possibly.
