I agree that this is probably the main reason. And Mayfield is probably pissed because he sees he is clearly one of the 85 best players on the team, which he certainly is.
However, I can see Mayfield transferring even if he got a scholly, since he has now shown he is a D-1 starter at probably 30-40 schools right now, just not at Texas Tech, possibly.

He wanted a scholarship and was "promised one" by KK. Can you imagine being the starting QB for a Big 12 team and can't participate with your teammates in team activities due to your scholarship status?

The Gosling stuff is really hilarious to me because the only thing about Kingsbury i remember growing up during his playing career was him being a 3rd string QB for the Pats and looking like a total goober on the player profile pic on NFL 2k5

He can transfer within the Big XII because he is a walk on. What would KK be releasing him from if he doesnt have a scholarship. KK or TT has no control over where he goes.
