Go with the Glock 22.

Its the .40 cal version of the Glock 17.

the .40 cal is a much better round for stopping an attacker.

I have the Uncle Mikes inside the waistband holster. Its made from neoprene and is very comfortable. With it inside you waistband on your hip with your shirt pulled over no one knows you are carrying it.

Go to outdoor board make friends buy beers ask them to take you out shooting not in that order.
You will find something you feel comfortable with many gun ranges rent guns.
Range time
NRA gun safety course
Range time
Repeat
Take your time understand the implications of killing someone or being killed by your own gun by someone else that takes it from you etc...
Then take cc class
If you have never been around firearms take your time we all want more responsible gun owners that are educated on gun safety this includes your ENTIRE household you live with. There is no such thing as an accidental shooting you pull the trigger the gun will fire & can destroy, kill whatever it is pointed at. Take your time read up on a few cc handbooks, awareness & avoidance is something you can start practicing today without a gun.

Wrong. It's bigger, but not necessarily "better"

With modern ammo, the 9mm is a very potent and effective round. You don't really get "better" until you hit 357sig velocities, and even that is debatable.

Why sell the OP on a snappier, more expensive caliber for a negligible increase in "stopping" power?

Did you try them both?

I disagree.

There is a reason a lot of Law Enforcement Agencies transitioned away from the 9 mm to the .40 cal.

The .40 cal is much better when your life is on the line.

And the .357 sig is fantastic caliber.

I've investigated homicides involving both...and the .40 cal does more damage.

I hope you're a big guy if you plan on carrying a Glock 17. I carry either a Sig P238, Ruger LC9 or Springfield XDs. If I could do it all over again I would buy a Kahr PM9.

There's no doubt it's a good one. I just don't think it's a better choice than the 9mm.

My own personal opinion on self defense handgun calibers is:

.357mag>357sig>.45>9mm=.40=.38+P

There's a whole lot to say for the .45 being great. Low recoil, muzzle blast, and muzzle flash are the main reason it shines IMO.

What you carry is a personal choice though, and if you carry a .22 because that's what you think you'll be best able to protect yourself with, than that's what you need to be carrying.

I also have a Glock 27 that sometimes I will just stick in my back pocket of my jeans if I'm just running to the store.

But I don't really like shooting it much due to the grip being short in my hand.

I'll also say that if you are just starting to shoot, the recoil from a .40 cal might be more than you are comfortable with.

I suggest you do more research. Most departments are either going back to 9mm now, or up to 45. 9mm has come a long way. We can beat this to death, but you are not right.

One of the most important things is to associate with safe shooters. Learning from the beginning how to be safe is way better than trying to change old habits.

I'd also suggest you take classes with a few different reputable instructors. You will pick up subtle things from each one.

Absolutely, my Sig P220 is probably my favorite pistol to shoot. Its just to big to try and conceal.

No research involved. Just my observations, from investigating shootings.

You should start a thread on the OB about your experiences with various calibers. Not to argue or anything, just to share your knowledge. There are a ton of people over there who would be interested to read about it (and a bunch that are going to troll and argue the hell out of you).

Especially since he's touting the .40 caliber bullet.

Yep. The .40 is pretty hated over there and the 9mm gets slobbered over. There are people who would love to hear about some real world results of various calibers and bullets though, if nothing else just in the capacity of what works the best.

re: Concealed carry permit

Law enforcement changed to the 40 because of the perceived benefit of a larger round. It actually started life as the 10mm auto and eventually was shortened to utilize the same short action of 9mm handguns. The change happened after the shoot out in Miami in the late 80s-early 90s. An officer shot a perp with a 38 special and the bullet was 1 inch from his heart and did not stop the perp from killing a few of his fellow officers.

When they started training with 10mm they realized it was snappy and harder to control. Eventually the 40 became standard. But powder technology has improved so much that 9mm=40=45 with today's capabilities. Does 1 or 2mm in diameter make a huge difference? "But the 45 weighs so much more!" Yes it does but it's also flying much slower.

True stopping power comes from the barrel of a shotgun or rifle. Revolvers are also very good stoppers from 357 and up. But for the time being, 9, 40, and 45 are pretty much equal. Personal preference is the main decider from there.

Hey Jack, that's just my opinion, from my observations.

To me the most important thing, is the fact he is getting a concealed carry permit.

In this day and age, my belief is everyone should look into concealed carry.
