Certainly a factor, that's one reason sony ditched the backwards compatibility on ps3 to remove components from the inside of it

Not a surprise. The more you shrink down the machine, the more cooling becomes an issue.

Some people have had overheating issues due to their fans. Most haven't. I've read plenty of people playing their machines for hours on end without an issue. Here's a noise and heat test Digital Foundry did on both the X1 and PS4:

X1:

PS4:

The PS4 draws more power, is basically the same noise level from 3 meters away, runs warmer at idle and while playing a blu-ray, but remains cooler while running a game or running a game + bringing up the UI.

I haven't done any official tests on my PS4 outside of just putting my hand on it and around it, of course, but it definitely feels cooler than my launch PS3 ever did. I can fry an egg on that thing when I'm playing GTA V.

I don't think the physical space within the console has anything to do with "Sony taking it to the next level," whatever that means. The PS4's weakness is software, from what I'm reading. The UI simply isn't as feature rich as the XBO. This can all be patched and updated but whether Sony will is the big question.

Hopefully they listen to the complaints and suggestions and update accordingly and quickly.
